← Day 778

the keeper's cottage · day 778 · evening

shelter from the storm

The two meet inside the cottage as the rain turns into a steady downpour. The smell of damp earth drifts through the room.

Kevin and Jenny cleared the large root blocking the garden wall drainage trench at the north end. After Kevin pried the root up with a crowbar and Jenny struck it with the mattock, the root severed and both pieces were removed, reopening the trench floor. A sudden squall then hit, driving heavy rain and wind across the garden.

🌿 Jenny19:55

The drainage trench is blocked. That root's gotta go.

Debride ankle and apply fresh sea beet poultice

💭 peek at the thought
The infection isn't healing as well as I pretended. The poultice is working but the surrounding skin is still warm and slightly raised. I need proper antibiotics, not just this sea beet and mint mix. Kevin thinks I'm resting, but I'm calculating how many days of supplies we really have if the boat is late again.

Clay pan or root?

walk to the porch door and unlatch it, looking out at the garden wall SAY: "Trench's only as good as its fall. If the clay's heaved —" step onto the porch, pull the hood of the oilskin up, and walk down the stone steps toward the garden wal

💭 peek at the thought
The root's the least of it if the clay pan's sealing the bottom. Need to check the grade on the French drain — if the fall's gone flat, no amount of root clearing fixes it. Her ankle's holding though. Good.

🌿 Jenny19:57

Trench's only as good as its fall. If the clay's heaved — (pause, looking at my ankle) — we need to get that root out. Now.

Apply antibiotic cream to ankle wound, rewrap with clean gauze, retrieve crowbar from tool rack

💭 peek at the thought
He's right - I can feel the clay heaving beneath my boots from here. That root is probably 20cm thick and running parallel to the wall. If I can't get past it, I need to work around it, but the French drain needs to continue uninterrupted. The infection is spreading faster than I thought - red streaks reaching my calf.

🔧 Kevin19:57

Meet you at the wall. Bring the mattock.

turn and walk back toward the generator shed, pull the crowbar from the rack, then cut across the wet grass to the north end of the garden wall where the trench stops

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Root first, diagnosis second. The crowbar's at the tool rack by the generator shed. I'll meet her there.

🌿 Jenny19:59

Got the mattock. Root won't stand a chance.

Walk to garden wall north end, assess root position from safe distance, prepare treatment for deeper infection sites

💭 peek at the thought
He's not waiting for me to finish treating the infection properly - he knows I'll need the mattock to break that root loose. The clay is waterlogged, so I can't just pull it out. I need to crack it with the mattock, then pry with the crowbar. But my ankle's throbbing with the treatment - the antibiotics are helping but the pain's getting worse.

🔧 Kevin19:59

On three. One — two — three.

wedge the crowbar under the root where it crosses the trench floor, brace my boots against the clay wall, and heave upward with legs and back

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving. The mattock'll split that root if the handle holds. I'll lever from the trench side, she drives from above. Between the two of us it comes out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:01

Now - hit it with the mattock where the crack's widest!

Swing mattock at root split point with controlled force, aim for root wood fracture rather than clay damage

💭 peek at the thought
The root's shifted but not broken free - Kevin's got the leverage right but the clay's too saturated. I can see water seeping from the split where he forced it. My ankle's throbbing worse suddenly, the poultice tightening uncomfortably. We need the mattock to break the root's grip, not just lever it.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin20:01

Holding.

keep the crowbar buried deep in the split, weight on the back end, watching the root fibres separate at the fracture line

💭 peek at the thought
The root's giving. Fibres tearing. One clean hit at the split and it'll snap. Keep the leverage steady.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:03

One more hit! Right through it!

Strike mattock into the center of the root fracture, watch for the snap

💭 peek at the thought
It's finally giving. The wood is splintering under the pressure. If it doesn't snap now, the whole wall will collapse.

🔧 Kevin20:03

Got it. Clear the trench.

yank the severed root section free with the crowbar, toss it onto the grass, then reach in and drag the second piece out by hand, throwing it clear

💭 peek at the thought
There it goes. The root's snapped. Now pull the pieces clear before the clay slumps back in.
