The Calm Before the Rain

The air remains still as the sun sets, and the tide reaches its lowest point.

Kevin and Jenny spend the night at the old shrine as the humidity hangs heavy in the air. They rest and prepare for the day's tasks while monitoring the barometer and the approaching supply boat.

Kevin — sit on the shrine steps, watching the water pull back

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's out far enough I could walk the reef to the south beach if I wanted. Limpets would be thick on the exposed rock. But my hands are clean for once — no grease, no epoxy, no blood — and the radio's due for its weekly check-in with the trust in the morning. Might as well stay put and let the hunger sharpen a bit.

It's coming out far tonight.

make sketch: the exposed tide pools at the southern shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is out so far I can probably see the kelp-forest roots, but I'm too tired to walk down.

Lowest ebb of the month. Spring tide with the new moon.

reach into pocket, fingertips brushing the sealed letter to Tom, then pull out a limpets shell instead and turn it over in my hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping again. Good. The sketchbook gives her something to hold besides the cane. The tide pools at the southern shelf — she's seen them at every stage now, documented the zonation from splash zone down to the kelp line. More data than the trust will know what to do with.

Good for checking the ridge drainage.

lean back against the weathered stone and rub my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide stays this low, maybe I can find that stable soil pocket near the cliffs tomorrow.

Trench at the northeast corner took the overflow. Clay's holding.

toss the limpet shell toward the dark water, hear it skip once before it disappears

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. The ankle still bothers her — she only rubs it when she thinks I'm not watching close. The ridge drainage held through the squall, I know because I walked it at 0300 in the rain. But she needs to verify it herself. That's who she is.

🌿 Jenny00:57

We need to test the pH there in the morning.

open the notebook and record the low tide level.

💭 peek at the thought
If the clay is holding, I can finally start thinking about those grandmother's seeds.
