The Waiting Tides

The rain does not let up as the tide begins to turn, the water beginning to inch closer to the seaward dock.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the southern cove. Kevin works on the dock, hammering oak wedges deeper into the mooring ring to counteract the compression from the surge-lines, while Jenny watches from the cottage porch, her ankle throbbing as the dark water swirls around the pilings.

🔧 Kevin02:31

Kevin — pull on oilskin and boots, grab headlamp, walk down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Rain's not letting up. Dock'll take the swell different now — water pushing under the stringers, testing every bolt I drove. Should walk the lines before full dark. Jenny's asleep or close to it. Don't wake her unless the barometer drops another three millibars.

🌿 Jenny02:31

Watch the lines, Kevin! The surge is already hitting the pier!

stand up slowly, knees creaking, and walk to the porch to watch him through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in that dark for a boat that is three days away. The tide is coming in faster than I predicted this morning.

🔧 Kevin02:32

Lines are doubled. Chock's the weak point. Stay on the porch — if the ring goes, I'll need you on the radio.

walk the dock to the seaward mooring ring, check the chafe at the chock and the oak wedges in the mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's up. Good. Two pairs of eyes on the mooring. The surge is hitting earlier than the tide table said — barometer's steady but the swell's pushing hard from the northeast. Lines are doubled but the chock on the seaward side was showing fresh chafe this morning. If the ring pulls the mortise, the whole finger pier goes.

🌿 Jenny02:33

Don't stay out too long! The water is turning black!

lean against the whitewashed stone wall, gripping the railing as I watch the waves break against the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls, the dinghy is gone and I'm stuck on this rock with nothing but a tin of seeds.

🔧 Kevin02:34

Wedges are working. Mortise is sound but the oak's compressing. Going to drive them deeper and run a third line to the north piling.

pull mallet from belt, drive the six oak wedges deeper into the mooring ring mortise, then run a new half-inch line from the ring to the north piling with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Water's black — no light behind the cloud cover, just the swell rolling in. She's right about the color. Means the surge is stacking against the dock face, not just lifting. The ring's holding but the wedges are working loose with each cycle. Mortise timber's sound but the oak's compressing. Need to drive them deeper or add a third line to the north piling before the next big set.

🌿 Jenny02:35

Be careful with those wedges! The surge is too high!

watch from the edge of the porch, the wind tasting salt and rain, tracking his headlamp flicker against the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fighting the ocean with a hammer and hope. If that wood splits, the whole dock goes with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:36

Setting the third line first. Takes the side load off the ring. Then I'll snug the wedges.

run the new half-inch line from the mooring ring to the north piling, take the strain on a come-along, make it fast with a round turn and two half hitches, then drive the wedges home with measured blows

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Surge is slamming the dock face — each wave hits the ring sideways, not just up and down. Wedges are holding for now but the mortise timber's groaning. If I drive them too hard I'll split the oak and lose the bite. Better to set the third line first, take the load off the ring, then snug the wedges. North piling's solid — sistered it with greenheart last month, four 150mm through-bolts.

🌿 Jenny02:37

It's holding! Come back before the tide takes the pier!

grip the wood of the porch, heart hammering against my ribs, watching the waves swallow the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The line is holding. I can see the tension in the rope even from here. He's crazy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:38

Holding. Third line took the side load. Wedges are home. Coming in.

coil the come-along, secure the loose end, walk back up the dock to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Third line's holding. North piling didn't move. The ring's sitting quieter now — side load's off the mortise. Wedges are driven home, oak compressed tight. Water's lapping the deck boards. Two more big sets and it'll be over the stringers. That's the limit. Time to get off the dock.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:39

You're a fool staying out there. The water was right at the choke.

step onto the porch, my ankle throbbing in the cold, and pull the door open for him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually back. The tide is clawing at the dock but the ring is still holding.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:40

The ring held. We're good for this tide.

step onto the porch, shake water off the oilskin, hang it on the peg, go inside to the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold and wet and her ankle's throbbing but she's standing in the door holding it open. The ring held. The third line held. The wedges held. That's the job done. Now the stove's warm and there's broth in the pot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:41

We're lucky the wood didn't

💭 peek at the thought
He's so casual about it. The surge nearly took the whole thing.
