A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin inspected the dock lines and mooring ring, noting the wear on the rope and the looseness of the ring. Jenny climbed the cliff edge, sketched the widening tension crack, and observed the slope’s erosion pattern.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Kevin — walk to the generator shed, check fuel gauge and top off if needed

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down harder. Tank's full, overflow running. Need to check the generator fuel level before the light fails — supply boat's two days out and we're burning diesel for the radio charge cycle.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Watch the footing, Kevin. We don't have enough to waste a drop.

Sit on the porch, open my notebook, and start sketching the way the rain is hitting the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to spill the diesel again if he's not careful on that slope.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Aye.

walk to the generator shed, check fuel gauge, top off from drum if needed

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the fuel. And the footing — the clay's slick as grease on the path. Generator shed's just past the garden wall.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Jenny — sharpen my pencil and focus on the jagged edge of the tension crack on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening for once, even if the wind is picking up.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Three-quarters on the gauge. Drum's got two fills left.

walk back to the cottage, wipe boots on the porch mat, pour coffee from the kettle

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's showing three-quarters full. Good for another week at this draw. Drum's got maybe two fills left. Rain's pooling on the shed roof — tarp's holding but the wind's shifting.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Good. Don't let the rain get in it.

Take a hot mug of coffee and watch the rain blur the island edges.

💭 peek at the thought
That should be enough for now, if the boat isn't late.

🔧 Kevin03:12

Kevin — lean against the porch post, drink coffee, watch the ridge line blur

💭 peek at the thought
Coffee's strong, black. Mug warms the hands. Rain's not letting up — west wind driving it horizontal across the porch. She's watching the ridge. The crack she sketched this morning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:13

That crack is getting wider. Every storm.

Draw a quick, jagged map of the erosion pattern near the north slope.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is going to slide if it keeps pouring like this. I need to check the depth of that crack own.

🔧 Kevin03:15

Trench is holding. But the clay behind it's saturated. We need deeper pilings or a second bench drain. Not this week. Boat comes first.

set mug down, pull the radio log from the shelf, flip to the last entry

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Four millimetres wider since yesterday by her measure. The intercept trench is taking the water but the clay's weeping behind the shoring. Another wet season and the whole slope could cut loose.

🌿 Jenny03:16

We'll see what the boat brings. Just watch the fuel.

Trace the line of the crack in my sketch, noting exactly where the soil is starting to fail.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, that ridge is going to take the whole garden anyway.
