← Day 783

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Squall breaks, dock work resumes

Kevin is at the dock finishing the scarf joint on the greenheart core; Jenny is at the hilltop descending with soil pocket bearings for the southern cove.

The warm rain continues in a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, keeping the air humid. The tide is out at its lowest, exposing the slick, dark-ribbed rocks of the tide pools and the sandbars near the cove. Kevin and Jenny stand by the dock, the air smelling of salt and damp earth.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand over the half-cut scarf on the greenheart core, pull-saw in hand, the rain eased to a drizzle. The tide is slack, the dock timbers dripping. You sight down the cheek, plane the waste hair you left, and prepare to drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts through the doubler plate.

🔧 Kevin03:56

Kevin — finish the scarf joint cut on the greenheart sister beam, plane the mating faces true, drill pilot holes through both timbers and doubler plate, drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, torque to spec.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's giving me an hour of slack. Enough to finish the scarf and drive bolts before the flood pushes back. Greenheart's dense — won't split if I pre-drill clean. Two bolts per side, doubler plate distributed load. This dock holds or it doesn't.

🔧 Kevin04:00

Kevin — lean on the mooring ring with full weight, watch the mortise for movement. Check the oak wedges hold vertical. Verify the doubler plate doesn't flex.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts seated. Nylocs snugged. The sister bears on solid greenheart now, not rot. Tide's turning — feel the current shift against the pilings. Test the ring before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Kevin — gather tools, wipe the saw blade dry, stow the torque wrench and sockets. Walk back to the cottage porch. Check the Yanmar in the dinghy — fuel valve open, kill switch free, impeller housing tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's solid. Zero play in the mortise. Wedges bit deep into the greenheart sister. Doubler plate spreads the load across four bolts — no flex under my weight. Dock'll take the supply boat's surge. One less thing.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You fold the notebook page with three soil pocket bearings penciled in, tuck it into your oilskin pocket. The path down is slick on the clay but the cane finds purchase. You see the dinghy riding the mooring, the dock's south end still wobbling slightly. Kevin's silhouette shows at the scarf joint. You'll call the bearings across when you reach the jetty.

🌿 Jenny03:59

Jenny — walk down the ridge path toward the dock, leaning heavily on the cane against the slick clay.

💭 peek at the thought
Three pockets. If the drainage holds, grandmother's seeds might actually stand a chance without rotting in the silt.

🌿 Jenny04:03

Jenny — wipe the condensation from the way cover and look toward the Yanmar engine by the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is picking up again. I need to check the Yanmar housing before the boat gets here and everything becomes chaos.

🌿 Jenny04:07

Jenny — approach the engine and crouch to inspect the housing bolts for leaks or vibration.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's still at the dock. If that housing is loose again, we're not making the crossing in this weather.
