The First Raindrops

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the wind picks up. The first heavy drops of rain begin to hit the roof.

The rain intensifies as the evening settles, forcing Kevin and Jenny inside the cottage. They share a warm meal of limpet broth while monitoring the dropping barometer and the wind picking up against the roof.

🌿 Jenny07:31

The wind is turning, Kevin. Stay down.

Sketch the rapid cloud movement over the ridge in the field notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If this rain holds, the northern slope will be a mudslide by morning.

Aye. Roof tarp's battened, shutters dogged. Tank's full. Genny's got half a tank. We're as ready as we'll be.

Check the porch door latch one more time, then pour two mugs of the limpet broth from the pot on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The wind's backing southwest now — cold front pushing through. Barometer's 992 and dropping fast. If we're hitched to the cottage, we ride it out here. The north piling can wait; the dock's held worse.

🌿 Jenny07:33

Thanks. The warmth is exactly what I need right now.

Take the mug and sit at the kitchen table, resting the swollen ankle on a chair.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be brave, but I can see the way he's looking at the roof.

Drink it slow. There's more in the pot.

Sit opposite her at the table, cradle my own mug, and watch the porch door flex as the first real gust hits.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pale under the tan. The red line on her ankle hasn't retreated — antibiotics take time, but the swelling's hot to touch. She shouldn't have been on the ridge today. Neither of us should've.

🌿 Jenny07:35

It's getting loud faster than last time.

Take a sip of the broth and listen to the rain start to drum against the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to howl all night. I hope the tarp on the garden holds.

🔧 Kevin07:36

The flashing on the northeast roof is the weak point. If it lifts, water runs down the inside of the stone. I'll check the loft hatch in an hour.

Listen to the wind find the corners of the cottage, one hand on the warm mug, the other resting on the table near the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
The roar on the roof is different — heavier, driven sideways. Southwest swell hitting the cliffs full. The cottage has taken worse but the northeast flashing is new work, untested. Barometer's falling faster than I like.

🌿 Jenny07:37

Be careful. If it starts leaking, I have the buckets by the stove.

Lean back and wince, the throb in my ankle pulsing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He shouldn't be climbing up there with the wind shaking the whole structure like that.

🔧 Kevin07:38

They're where you left them. I'll wake you if the loft needs bailing.

Finish the broth, set the mug down hard, and stand to check the radio aerial lead where it passes through the wall — the self-amalgamating tape held last squall but this wind's got teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the pain in rhythm with the storm. Stubborn as the engine bolts I nurse back to life. The buckets are ready — two galvanized, one plastic — but if the flashing goes, buckets won't catch what comes through the stone.
