Low Tide Inspection and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny stand on the south dock as the tide recedes to expose the barnacings. Jenny checks the barometer while Kevin inspects the mooring ring for signs of stress from the last storm.

Kevin and Jenny stand at the dock as the tide begins to creep up the pilings. Kevin uses a 19mm wrench to test the 150mm stainless through-bolts on the doubler plate, checking for any give, while Jenny shifts her weight to her good leg, wincing as she begins sketching the sea cave strata in her notebook.

🔧 Kevin07:51

Wedges are tight. No play in the mortise.

crouch at the waterline, scraping barnacles off the ring shackle with the knife tip to check the pin wear

💭 peek at the thought
The ring's held two gales now. Oak wedges bit deep into the mortise. Still — salt eats steel quiet. Need eyes on it every tide.

🌿 Jenny07:53

Check the bolts too. The salt eats the threads faster than we see.

Jenny shifts weight to her good leg, wincing, and begins a rough sketch of the sea cave strata in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock is holding, maybe the soil is too, but my ankle feels like it's being worked iron.

🔧 Kevin07:53

Aye. Taking the wrench to them now.

pull the 19mm wrench from the belt loop, test each of the four 150mm stainless through-bolts on the steel doubler plate — feeling for give, checking nut faces flush to washers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The through-bolts on the doubler plate took the full surge load. Threads can look clean and still be paper-thin.

🌿 Jenny07:55

Look for galling on the threads. If they strip, we replace them now.

way presses the pencil hard against the paper, detailing the iron-rich bands in the clay floor to ignore the pulse in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are stripped, the whole jetty goes, and I'm losing the boat with it.

🔧 Kevin07:55

Checking.

crack each nut loose a quarter turn, then snug back — feeling for grit, binding, the sudden grab of galled threads

💭 peek at the thought
Galling shows as dull streaks on stainless — cold-welded under load. If the nuts won't spin free clean, the bolts are compromised. Only one spare 150mm left at the shutter.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:57

If they don't turn smooth, don't force them. Use the spares.

Jenny stops sketching, her pencil hovering over the page as she watches his hands against the salt spray.

💭 peek at the thought
If they're binding, the salt has already won. I can't afford a structural failure.

🔧 Kevin07:57

Two binding. One spare. Which takes priority — the seaward corner or the landward?

hold the wrench on the frozen fourth nut, not forcing, waiting for the call

💭 peek at the thought
First bolt turns clean. Second bites at the last thread — galling. Third spins free. Fourth won't break loose at all. That's two suspect. One spare. Need to decide which to replace now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:59

Seaward first. It's taking the brunt of the swell.

Jenny points to the rotting timber, her hand trembling where she grips the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seaward side goes, the whole thing shears in the next surge. We lose the anchor.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:59

On it.

work the galled seaward nut back and forth with penetrating oil and the wrench, easing it free without snapping the bolt — then drive the spare 150mm through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut, torquing to 35Nm

💭 peek at the thought
Seaward corner it is. The frozen nut's on the landward side — can leave it for now if the other three hold. But the seaward bolt's galled. Need to back it out clean and swap the spare in before the tide turns.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:01

Check the landward side. If it's soft too, we need to reinforce the whole frame.

Jenny leans against the cottage wall, watching the tide rise over the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
The metal is holding for now, but the wood is mush. My ankle is screaming.
