MIDDAY

The tide is rising steadily toward the shore, and the morning heat intensifies as Kevin and Jenny prepare to tackle their tasks before the supply boat's expected arrival in four days.

Kevin hauls the cracked jerry can toward the workshop, using the crowbar for leverage to manage the weight. Jenny limps toward the cottage porch, clutching the heirloom seed tin and the full diesel can, careful to keep the seeds dry from the humidity.

🔧 Kevin10:42

Right. You take the seeds and the good diesel can up to the cottage. I'll drag the cracked one to the workshop and patch it before the fumes hit the stove.

grab the cracked jerry can by the handle and haul it toward the workshop shed, crowbar hooked through the other handle for leverage

💭 peek at the thought
Need to get that diesel can sealed before the heat expands the crack further. Epoxy's nearly gone — might have to use the marine tar from the roof repair kit. Tide's coming up fast; the crate's already lifting.

🌿 Jenny10:43

Okay. Just... keep the seed tin away from the water.

Jenny picks up the heirloom seed tin and the full heavily can, limping carefully toward the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle feels like it's burning again, but I need to get that poultice on before I lose my focus.

🔧 Kevin10:44

Seeds go on the high shelf. Not the table.

wrestle the cracked jerry can through the workshop door, set it on the bench, and pull the roofing tar tub from the shelf above the vise

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side hard. Ankle's not right yet, no matter what she says. Should've made her stay off it another day.

🌿 Jenny10:45

I'll put them on the top shelf.

Jenny enters the cottage, sets the seed tin and fuel can on the kitchen counter, and sits on the stool to unwrap her ankle bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the shelf; the table is already a mess of sketches and salt anyway.

🔧 Kevin10:46

Kevin — scoop a wad of roofing tar with the putty knife, press it hard into the hairline crack along the jerry can's seam, smooth it over with the blade heated by the propane torch flame

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Top shelf stays dry if the foundation weeps again. Now seal this can before the diesel vapours find a spark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:47

Make sure it's thick.

Jenny reaches for the tin of antibiotic and the sea beet, winincing as she begins to prepare the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If that doesn't hold, the oil is going to ruin the workshop floor, and I don't have another can.

🔧 Kevin10:48

Kevin — set the putty knife down, wipe hands on a rag, and step to the workshop door to watch the tar cure in the heat

💭 peek at the thought
She's still doctoring that ankle. Good. Means she's taking it serious. Tar's setting — need to let it skin over before I move the can.

🌿 Jenny10:49

It's getting really hot in here.

Jenny applies the cool sea much poultice to the wound, her eyes fixed on the red streaks tracing her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us is heavier than the humidity today; I can feel the infection throbbing in my marrow.
