Morning Inventory and Prep

Kevin stands over the cracked diesel can, holding the propane torch to warm the metal for epoxy. Jenny sits on the steps, reviewing the supply boat manifest while the light breeze picks up from the garden.

The morning light is clear as a light onshore breeze begins to warm the dry air. The tide is out low, exposing the rocky floor of the tide pools near the shore. Kevin works by the cottage, preparing the diesel can for the epoxy repair, while Jenny inspects the north ridge garden beds for any damage from the previous night's wind.

Manifest say when the boat's actually coming?

Hold the propane torch to the diesel can seam, heating the metal evenly before applying epoxy.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy's already failed once on this can. Salt's too deep in the pores. Should've brazed it when I had gas. Now I'm just burning torch fuel I can't replace.

Three days, if the wind holds. If not, we're on rations another week.

Trace the line of a crack in the dirt with a pencil, imagining the garden beds on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the schedule again, but the soil on the north ridge is washing away right now.

🔧 Kevin11:23

Wind's onshore now. Backing south by evening if the glass is right.

Set the torch down, wipe hands on a rag, and walk to the porch rail to scan the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. Wind out of the southwest'll push her off course. She'll come though. Always does.

🌿 Jenny11:25

If it doesn't come, I'll have to start de-contaminating the can anyway.

Stand up and shift the weight off my own, looking out at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The glass is always right, but the island doesn't care about his schedule.

🔧 Kevin11:25

Epoxy won't hold. Salt's in the metal. Need to braze it or weld. Got neither.

Lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning the garden again. Same as eleven months ago. Soil's still half weeds.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Then I'll scrub it with the vinegar again. Maybe the salt will come out this time.

Pick up the way and start drawing the sea much morphology, ignoring the pulse in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I know that, I don't need the lecture on the physics of the failure.

🔧 Kevin11:27

You'll waste vinegar and time. Can's done.

Turn and walk back to the workbench, pick up the torch, check the fuel gauge.

💭 peek at the thought
Vinegar won't pull salt from steel pores. She knows that. She's just keeping her hands busy.

🌿 Jenny11:29

I have time. The boat is in three days.

Open the notebook and focus on the gland density of the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so certain of failure while the soil is literally sliding under our feet.
