Morning inspection and radio contact

Kevin and Jenny sit on the cottage porch in the bright calm, mugs of coffee steaming between them. Kevin checks the Yanmar's mounting bolts with a wrench while the engine idles, listening for the vibration he chased yesterday. Jenny unwraps the jerry can from its cure wrap, turning the pitted seam to the light to judge the epoxy bond.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin13:25

Bolt tension's holding. Vibration's down to a hum at idle — comes back faint above half throttle. Prop shaft true, so it's the bracket or the mount itself.

set wrench down on porch rail, lift mug with both hands, blow steam off the coffee

💭 peek at the thought
Vibration's still there at idle. Barely a whisper through the mounts, but it's there — prop shaft or the bracket alignment. Can't chase ghosts forever. Jerry can seam looks clean under the wrap, but deep pitting don't forgive epoxy. Thirteen days of diesel if we're careful. Fourteen if we're not.

The pitting is deeper than it looked. If the salt got under the bond, it'll fail the first time we strain.

Run a thumb over the cured epoxy seam on the jerry can, feeling for any give or grit.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bracket is skewed, the whole assembly will shake itself apart eventually, but I need to see if the epoxy holds first.

🔧 Kevin13:27

Sound can's clean. This one's a gamble. Run the generator off the sound one, keep the Yanmar on the sound one. If the boat comes in three days like the Frenchman said, we stretch. If not —

take a slow sip of coffee, eyes on the jerry can in her hands

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt under epoxy is a clock. Can't hear it tick, but it's counting. We got the sound can still. One good can, one maybe. Thirteen days on one engine, generator every third night. Math don't lie.

🌿 Jenny13:29

If the boat doesn't come, we'll be eating seeds from the ridge anyway.

Look down at the rusted tin of grandmother's seeds, the weight of them heavy in my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
He always goes to the 'if not' like the island isn't already trying to swallow us.

🔧 Kevin13:29

Ridge'll feed us. If the slope don't slide first.

set mug down, reach for the wrench again, turn the aft starboard mount bolt a hair tighter by feel

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge seeds. Heirloom tomato, sea beet, the potato crate. We eat if the garden holds. Salt's creeping up the north slope — saw the weeping clay yesterday. Three undermining points. She knows the math same as me. Just saying it different.

🌿 Jenny13:31

I'll start the terracing on the north face tomorrow once the epoxy is set.

Trace the line of a crack in the dirt with my finger, imagining where the roots might finally find the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The slope is unstable, I saw the cracks near the spring after the last rain.

🔧 Kevin13:32

Epoxy needs twenty-four hours full cure. Salt contamination means forty-eight. Don't load the seam till then.

wipe wrench on trousers, clip it to belt loop, stand and stretch shoulders against the morning sun

💭 peek at the thought
Terracing buys time. Cedar stakes at meter intervals, bitumen membrane in the trench, lime beds above. She's got the sketch in her notebook — drainage bed, intercept shoring, the works. Ground's treacherous up there. Weeping clay at forty centimeters, iron bands deeper. One bad rain and the whole face lets go.

🌿 Jenny13:33

I'll mark the jerry cans with the cure time so we don't forget.

Take the waterproof marker and write "48h" in three places on the east wall of the cottage, visible from the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty-eight hours. We eat on the sound can until then.
