Evening meal and radio contact

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the dimming light, sharing corned beef and limpet broth. The shortwave radio sits charged on the shelf, its aerial lead sealed at the wall penetration. Outside, the cloud cover thickens and the tide is high, lapping at the dock pilings. Kevin picks up the handset to call the supply boat on 2182 for the confirmed ETA and weather window.

Kevin spent the day checking the dock's structural integrity and preparing for the supply boat's arrival. Jenny focused on the epoxy repair for the jerry can, though the deep pitting in the metal makes the final bond a concern.

Twenty-one-eight-two, anyone copy? Captain, this is the keeper on Sorrel Island - do you read me?

Hold the handset to my ear and listen for response.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio's been dead for three calls now, but I've got to try again. If I don't hear back, I'll know what that means about tomorrow's window.

Kevin — lean back in the chair, arms folded, eyes on the barometer (1003 hPa) and the window where the tide laps the dock pilings. Listen.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the handset. Good. Her voice carries better on single sideband than mine does — less gravel, clearer modulation. Let her run the check. I'll watch the meter and the weather.

🌿 Jenny14:17

Jenny — set the handset down on the table with a heavy click and look at Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
Just static. The wind in the palms is louder than the radio tonight.

🔧 Kevin14:17

Try 4125. Night frequency carries further.

Reach for the tin of corned beef, fork out a chunk, eat it cold. Watch her.

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing. Not even static worth hearing. Either the boat's radio is off, they're out of range, or the skipper's ignoring the schedule. Barometer's holding but that cloud deck's lowering. Could be the front they warned about.

🌿 Jenny14:20

"Alright. Forty-one-twenty-five." (Bring the handset back to my ear, fingers tight on the microphone button.)

Listen to the static, then speak into the mic.

💭 peek at the thought
4125. Maybe. Or maybe I'm just talking to the tide coming in.

🔧 Kevin14:20

Kevin — pour the last of the limpet broth into the tin mug, drink it slow. Keep one eye on the barometer needle. The other on the porch where the storm lantern flame steadies against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
4125 at night. Skipwave off the ionosphere. If the French trawler's still in the region he'll hear it. If the supply boat's captain has his set on, he'll hear it. If not — we wait.

🌿 Jenny14:26

(After a pause) "Captain, this is Jenny. Same coordinates. Weather holding?"

Wait with the handset pressed to my ear, listening through the static for any response.

💭 peek at the thought
The broth's gone warm in the mug, like everything else tonight.

🔧 Kevin14:26

Kevin — set the empty mug down. Stand, stretch the stiffness from my back. Walk to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width. Taste the wind — salt, wet earth, the ozone bite of coming rain. The tide's high enough to slap the cross-bracing.

💭 peek at the thought
Her voice steady. Good. The pause before the call sign — she waited for a break in the static. That's discipline. The Frenchman answered last time on 4125 at 1400. Night propagation's different. Could reach St. Pierre. Could reach nothing.
