Evening at the shrine

They walk the ridge path together as the sun drops toward the western water. The shrine's stone ring catches the last light, the carved initials 'LB' shadowed deep. A breeze moves off the sea, cool after the day's heat. They stand side by side among the stones, not speaking yet, the tin mugs warm in their hands.

The south-east wind picks up, whipping salt spray off the reef and toward the old shrine. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the lower reef while Kevin and Jenny stand by the stone structure, the air heavy with the dry season heat.

🌿 Jenny15:17

The wind is picking up from the south again.

Trace the edge of the 'LB' carving with my thumb without looking at him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the names again. I wonder if he realizes the salt is taking them back now.

Barometer's holding at one-zero-zero-eight. Steady. But the swell on the reef's building — you can hear it from here.

Stand shoulder to shoulder at the shrine, mug cradled in both hands, eyes on the western horizon where the sun touches water.

💭 peek at the thought
The letter's still in my pocket, folded hard against my thigh. She knows it's there. She's known for days. Neither of us has said the word "contract" or "mainland" or "five years" out loud. The wind tastes like salt and coming rain.

🌿 Jenny15:19

I hear it. The spray is already hitting the lower rocks.

Tighten my grip on the mug and look out at the dark line of the reef.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the sound. It's the heartbeat of the island.

South-east fetch runs two hundred miles before it hits that reef. Nothing to break it.

Take a slow sip of the warm broth, salt on the rim. Let the silence stretch. Don't reach for the letter. Don't reach for her hand. Just stand there in the cooling wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the water, not me. Smart. The letter burns in my pocket but the sea doesn't care about contracts. The reef's throwing white thirty feet up — big swell for this time of year.

way we'd better check the way can seam again in the morning.

Turn away and start to sketch the 'LB' on the stone, noting how the salt is already softening the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
Two enough miles of open water just to find us on this piece of rock.

First light. Low tide at oh-six-hundred. I'll check it while the water's down.

Watch her sketch for a moment — the careful pencil lines, the way she shades the salt-eaten edges. Then turn back to the reef, mug raised.

💭 peek at the thought
Jerry can seam. She means the diesel can. Epoxy's been curing three days. Deep pitting on that seam — I knew when I laid it the bond might not hold. She's thinking ahead. Always thinking ahead. The 'LB' initials... she's mapping decay. Measuring how fast the island eats names.

🌿 Jenny15:23

I'll have the marsh mallow ready for the ridge then.

Close the way and start the walk back down to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide is low enough, the epoxy might actually hold against the pressure.

🔧 Kevin15:23

Kevin — follow her down the ridge path, boots finding the worn track in the dimming light. The shrine stones recede behind — 'LB', 'E', the softwood scrap with its carved promise.

💭 peek at the thought
Marsh mallow for the ridge. Salt-tolerant, deep roots, holds soil. She's already planning the next planting while the current one's still fighting damping-off. The letter presses against my thigh with each step down the ridge. Five years. Or the mainland. She hasn't asked. I haven't told. The wind carries her footsteps on the path ahead of me.
