waiting out the storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof. You and Jenny sit by the stove, watching the barometer continue to drop.

Kevin and Jenny shared a meal of tinned mackerel and mint. Kevin secured the shade cloth over the seed trays before they retired for the night.

Pressure's dropping. Boat's four days out — if it shows.

glance at the barometer on the shelf, then at the shortwave radio

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's at 1015 and falling. Rain's here. We've got four days until the supply boat's due — if it comes. The dinghy's still not right. Engine mount bolts checked, carb clean, sail reefed. But I haven't sea-trialed it under load. Haven't tested the engine-sail balance she asked about. If the boat doesn't come, or if something goes wrong, that dinghy's our only way off. My hands know this engine. They know every bolt, every sound. But knowing isn't doing. I should've run the trial yesterday. Should've done it the day before.

It'll show. Or it won't. But the barometer is steady for now, so stop staring at it.

Lean over and check the moisture on the seed trays.

He's already anticipating the failure. I can't stand that specific tone of resignation.

Mm.

pull the notebook from my pocket and flip to the Yanmar sea trial page, pen hovering

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Steady for now. But steady doesn't mean safe — it means wait. The seed trays matter to her. The dinghy matters to me. We both watch our own gauges.

Don't smudge the ink.

Reach for the tinned mackerel to start a simple dinner.

💭 peek at the thought
He's retreating into the engine logs again. It's easier to fix a piston than to talk to me.

🔧 Kevin12:20

Sorry.

close the notebook and move to help Jenny open the tin with the knife from the block

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me. Not the sky. Not the radio. Me. And the mackerel's coming out — simple, salty, familiar. I could help. I should. But my hands want to turn bolts, not chop fish. Still — eat first. Work after.

🌿 Jenny12:21

way be careful with that knife, the edge is dull.

Plate the mackerel and the drying mint sprigs.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being helpful for once. My stomach is growling loud.

You did good. You did good.

wipe my hands on the apron and move to the window to pull the shade cloth tighter over the seed trays </think>THOUGHT: She did good. wipe my hands on the apron and move to the window to pull the shade cloth tighter over the seed trays

💭 peek at the thought
Sharp edge matters less than clean hands. I can file it later. The mint's drying on paper — good for tea, maybe for the garden. She's plating like she's feeding us hope. I should say something about that.

Thank you.

Watch him through the glass, then start preparing the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Why is he repeating himself? He sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than me.
