Fog-bound Morning

Kevin and Jenny stand on the porch watching the thick fog swallow the lighthouse. The air is heavy and damp with the wet season heat while Kevin checks the barometer reading.

Thick morning fog smothers the island, leaving the lighthouse invisible and the ground saturated. Jenny stays inside the cottage battling a rising fever and a painful ankle, while Kevin monitors the barometer and prepares for the coming supply boat.

🌿 Jenny03:31

The pressure is dropping. It's going to hold.

Jenny leans heavily against the whitewashed stone wall, shifting weight off her left leg as she winces silently.

💭 peek at the thought
way own is throbbing in time with the pulse, and the fog is too thick to see even the north shelf today.

🔧 Kevin03:31

Mm. Fog'll burn off by ten if the wind shifts west. If it don't, we've got worse coming.

Tap the barometer glass with a calloused fingertip, then turn and lean against the porch rail beside her, close enough that shoulders almost touch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Barometer's at 1015 and the needle's lazy — not plummeting, but not holding either. That fog's thick enough to taste. She's favouring the left leg again, trying to hide the wince. Ankle's been troubling her for weeks now. I should've made her stay in bed, but she'd never hear of it.

🌿 Jenny03:33

The wind is stagnant. It's not going anywhere.

Jenny wipes a bead of sweat from her temple with the back of a hand, her eyes fixed on the grey wall of mist.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind doesn't shift, I can't even get to the north shelf today, and my ankle feels like fire.

🔧 Kevin03:33

Radio check at 0800. If the supply boat's still coming in three days, they'll be on 2182 listening for us.

Push off the rail, step back into the kitchen, and lift the shortwave handset from its cradle, flipping the power switch. The unit hums awake, green glow painting the dial.

💭 peek at the thought
Stagnant wind and dropping pressure with this heat — that's a storm brewing, not burning off. She knows it too, watching that fog like she can read the isobars in it. Sweat on her temple in this damp cold means fever or pain, probably both. Ankle's radiating heat I could feel from three feet away yesterday.

🌿 Jenny03:35

I'll be at the radio. If I can stand up.

Jennyinks down own the way bench, her breath hitching as she adjusts the damp bandage on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll run out of antibiotics before this infection hits the bone.

🔧 Kevin03:35

You sit. I'll run the check. You log what you hear.

Set the handset back in its cradle, cross the kitchen in two strides, and crouch beside the bench. Rest the back of one broad hand against her forehead, then reach for the thermometer on the shelf above the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn as a seized bolt, but that hitch in her breath wasn't performative. The infection's tracking — I saw the red line creeping past her ankle yesterday when I changed the poultice. Metronidazole course finished, doxycycline down to the last few tablets. If this goes septic, the radio won't matter. Need to check her temperature proper, not by the back of my hand. And she needs to stay off that leg, radio or no radio.

🌿 Jenny03:37

I'm fine. Just tired.

Jenny sits perfectly still, eyes fixed on the green light of the radio as she waits for the reading.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is so cool against my skin, it makes me want to cry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:38

Alright. I'm going to check the garden tarp corners anyway. If I'm gone more than four days, the seedlings'll be toast. You radio me if you hear anything on Tom's frequency.

Stand, grab my field notebook from the kitchen table, and head toward the door, pausing only to flip the generator's load test switch to off position.

💭 peek at the thought
"Fine" means she's in pain. The green light's steady now, no interference on 2182 yet. I can see her knuckles are white where she grips the bench edge. Ankle's swollen again, probably. Need to get that bandage changed properly, maybe get her some proper pain relief. If I don't find another antibiotic course soon...

🌿 Jenny03:39

Be careful. The ground is still too soft.

Jenny watches the door close, then slowly reaches for the radio dial, her fingers trembling over the plastic.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't realize how much I'm shaking now he's gone.

🔧 Kevin03:39

—

Pull the door shut behind me, the fog swallowing the porch light. Walk down the garden path, boots sinking in the softened earth, toward the tarp's west corner where the stake pulled loose yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
She heard the tremor in her own fingers. Knows what it means. Ground's been weeping for weeks — north ridge especially. That intercept trench I dug held last storm, but another saturation and the clay'll give. She's right to worry. But the garden tarp's got three corners lifting already from the last blow. If I don't batten them before this next system hits, we lose the tomato rows and the heirloom starts. She'll log the radio. She always does.
