The Waiting for the Storm

The tide is high, the pressure is dropping, and the fever is not letting go.

Kevin checked the dock mooring lines and dinghy ride as the tide fell and the barometer dropped to 1013 hPa, finding the storm anchor warp and doubled stern spring holding well. Jenny debrided her ankle infection, noting reduced pus and a stable red line, then tested the north shelf soil pH at 6.4. Both completed their intended tasks without complication.

(quiet, to Jenny) Barometer's dropping. Tide's turning. I'm going to check the dock lines quick — be back in ten minutes. You need anything before I go?

Feel Jenny's forehead with the back of my hand, check the ankle wrapping for heat/swelling, then grab the handheld VHF and head out to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 1013 and still falling. Tide's high but turning. Jenny's fever hasn't broken and the ankle's hot to touch. Supply boat due in three days if the weather holds. If it doesn't, we're on our own longer. Need to check the dock lines before the swell builds, but I won't leave her side while she's burning up.

I'm fine. way... watch the wind. The clouds are moving fast.

Reach for the glass of water on the nightstand, hand shaking slightly, and wince as the way pulls the infected skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room tilt, and my ankle feels like hot iron. If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'll be out of antibiotics.

Here.

Hand her the tin mug of water from the nightstand, re-wet the cold cloth for her forehead, then pull on my oilskin jacket and head out to the dock with the handheld VHF clipped to my belt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. Hand's shaking, fever's climbing, and she's watching clouds instead of resting. But she'd fight me if I hovered. Give her the water, check the ankle once more, then get to the dock before the wind shifts harder.

Don't stay out long. The sky is turning wrong.

Take a slow sip of the water and close my eyes, trying to ignore the throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is cold, but my skin is still fire. I need to debride that ankle before the storm, but I can barely see my hands.

Ten minutes. Radio's on 16 if you need anything.

Step out onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, and walk down the path to the dock scanning the mooring lines and the dinghy's ride as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's turning wrong and she knows it. Ten minutes at the dock — check the storm anchor warp, the stern spring, the mooring ring bolts. If the northeast wind picks up against this tide, the dinghy takes a beating. Back before she notices I'm gone longer.

(To myself) way enough clouds.

Roll back the bandage on my ankle, hiss as the air hits the infection, and reach for the antiseptic tweezers.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the wind shifts before the boat, I'm stuck here with a rotting leg.
