The Thickening Sky

Jenny sits on the steps watching the cloud cover grow darker over the north ridge. Kevin checks the barometer as the pressure drops to 1013 hPa. The air is heavy and humid with the coming rain.

Kevin checks the shortwave radio for the supply boat's status while the clouds thicken overhead. Jenny heads to the north ridge to assess the garden beds and prepares the soil for the heirloom seeds despite the damp air.

🌿 Jenny04:25

The pressure is dropping too fast. Do we need to move the tarp over the north ridge now?

stands up slowly, rubbing her ankle, and walks toward the kitchen to grab the trowel.

💭 peek at the thought
If those clouds break before I finish the lime bed, the soil will wash away before the seeds even take hold. I hate waiting.

🔧 Kevin04:25

Aye. Grab the extra roll from the shed. I'll meet you at the ridge with the mallet and timber strips.

walk to the garden shed, collect mallet and spare timber battens, then head up the north ridge path

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Three millibars in the time it took me to walk the dock. The ridge beds are exposed — if the wind backs northeast with this drop, the tarp'll shred before noon. Need to move now while the ground's still firm enough to drive stakes.

🌿 Jenny04:27

I've got the seeds and the tarp. Don't start without me!

grabs the tin of heirloom seeds and the roll of shade cloth, then heads out own the porch toward the shed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am. If I don't get that lime bed stabilized, the whole ridge will just be mud.

🔧 Kevin04:28

Not going anywhere. Windward stakes first — take your time.

continue up the north ridge path toward the garden expansion beds, mallet and battens in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than she lets on. The ankle's still troubling her, even with the antibiotics. I'll drive the stakes on the windward side first — gives her time to catch up without feeling rushed.

🌿 Jenny04:29

I'm coming! I'll see you at the ridge.

tucks the seed tin under her arm and limps toward the shed, squinting at the thickening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always so patient when the sky is turning that color. If I don't get the pH right, grandmother's seeds are just waste.

🔧 Kevin04:30

(nothing — too far to shout without wind stealing it)

reach the north ridge expansion beds, select stake positions along the windward edge at one-metre intervals, drive the first cedar stake deep with the mallet

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the tin. That's the priority — seeds dry, soil ready. The tarp can wait five minutes. I'll space the stakes for the heavy canvas, not the shade cloth; if this front hits like the barometer says, we'll need the storm tarp over the beds by midday anyway.
