Midday meal and supply boat check

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch at midday, wind driving rain sideways across the threshold. The barometer holds at 1013 hPa. The shortwave sits on the table, silent. A pot of limpet broth steams on the stove. They eat standing, watching the bay where the jellyfish bloom stretches to the horizon.

The midday sun beats down on the island as the air grows heavy with tropical humidity. The tide retreats steadily, exposing the slick rocks of the southern shore. Kevin and Jenny focus on the final preparations before the supply boat's arrival, though the falling barometer suggests a shift in weather is imminent despite the current clear skies.

The boat won't make it in two days. The swell is already too high.

Wipes broth from her lip and stares at the rain-streaked north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is going to slide if I don't finish the drainage, and I'm wasting grandmother's seeds on this mud anyway.

He'll come. Question's whether we meet him or he drops anchor and waits.

pour a second mug of broth from the pot, set it on the table beside the radio

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The swell's building faster than the barometer's dropping. Captain'll try anyway — payday don't wait — but he'll anchor off the south beach and we'll be ferrying stores through breaking surf in a dinghy with a vibration I haven't chased down yet.

We'll be out in the dinghy. I need to be there when the tide turns.

Picks up the mug, letting the warmth seep into her palms, and watches the rain hit the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't come, I'm out of salt in three days and that seed tin stays shut.

Tide turns at fourteen hundred. Swell'll be confused in the cut — wind against current. You're not boarding from the beach.

walk to the radio, flip the power switch, let the tubes warm while the static builds

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling me the plan. Ankle's still swollen, she can barely put weight on it yesterday, and she wants to be in a dinghy pitching through a south swell with a load of supplies. My call to stop her was the argument we didn't have last storm. Won't be this one.

🌿 Jenny04:41

Fourteen hundred. I have two hours to check the rigging before we go.

Tightens her grip on the mug, her eyes fixed on the glowing dial of the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get the manifest, I won't know if the salt is even on board.

Rigging's sound. Stern spring doubled, bow line slack for swell, anchor warp fifty meters to the ring. What you need is the engine to hold at displacement speed through chop.

reach past her for the logbook on the shelf, flip to the last engine test page, tap the RPM-vibration column

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours. She'll spend one checking the dinghy's lines, one arguing with me about the ankle, and zero resting. The vibration above half throttle is still there — prop shaft true, sleeve pressed, but the mast bracket's skewed and the engine mounts transmit every harmonic. I felt it in my teeth on the sea trial. She doesn't know. I didn't tell her.
