High tide and rising rain

Rain lashes the dock planks as Kevin checks the tension on the mooring lines. Jenny sits on a crate, wrapping her ankle dry while watching the waves grey over the reef.

The rain intensifies from the west, turning the air into a heavy, grey curtain. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower pilings of the dock as Kevin and Jenny work through the damp, preparing for the supply boat arrival in two days.

The way is soft through, Kevin. Don't pull so hard or you'll snap the cleat.

Pull the seed tin from her pocket and traces the rust on the lid with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot is going to take the jetty before the boat even arrives, and he's too worried about the ropes to see the wood.

Cleat's held worse. But I'll ease off.

slacken the stern line a fraction, secure it with a round turn and two half-hitches, then step back onto the dock planks and watch her hands on the tin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the cleat — old iron, salt-eaten. But she's tracing that tin again. The one marked E. She hasn't opened it. Neither have I.

It's not the line. It's the whole structure.

Open the tin and look at the grandmother's seeds, checking for any sign of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix the island with a knot, but the wood is literally eating itself under us.

🔧 Kevin06:13

The tin's been dry. I kept it sealed in the dry bag.

nod toward the cottage where the seed tin sits, then walk back up the dock planks toward the cottage, leaving the mooring lines to her attention

💭 peek at the thought
She's opening it again. Every day. Checking the seeds like the moisture's going to betray her somehow.

🌿 Jenny06:15

I know. way get inside before it gets worse.

Lift the lid of the tin and lean in to inspect the surface of the way seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's proud of a bag, but the moisture is in the air, in the marrow.

🔧 Kevin06:15

You're not making sense. Come on.

step back to the crate, take her arm, guide her toward the cottage path

💭 peek at the thought
She keeps saying "way" instead of "weed" or "wind" or something. Ankle infection's spreading — she's running fever, words slipping. I've seen this before on ships. Men who don't make it.
