← Day 804

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday work at dock and ridge

Kevin is at the dock planning the stringer cut-out; Jenny is at the north cliffs finishing her crack survey.

Kevin spent the midday at the dock monitoring the receding tide and checking the structural integrity of the pilings. Jenny navigated to the north cliffs to scout the horizon for the first sign of the approaching supply boat.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand over the chalk-marked rot line on the starboard stringer, measuring the cut span against the greenheart sister plates staged on the planking. The tide is turning, water dropping from the third rung, and you need to decide whether to saw the rotted section now or wait for lower water to brace the span.

🔧 Kevin06:24

Kevin — walk back to the cottage for the bow saw and come-along, then stage them at the dock's landward end for when the tide drops further.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot eats three feet landward of the scarf. If I cut now, the tide's still high enough to swell the grain and bind the saw. Wait for the drop, let the wood breathe, then brace proper with the come-along before the blade touches. Greenheart's staged, bolts are ready. One cut, one sister, done before dark.

🔧 Kevin06:28

Kevin — set the come-along from the sound piling to the starboard stringer, take up slack, then start the cut at the chalk line — slow, straight, letting the teeth clear salt-swollen grain.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropped two rungs now. Wood's breathing, grain opening. Good. Bow saw's sharp, come-along's rated. Greenheart sisters pre-drilled. Cut the rot clean, brace the span, bolt the sisters, done. Jenny's at the cliffs — she'll hear the saw if the wind holds west.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You fold the sketch page into your notebook, the crack map complete, and turn back toward the cottage. The path crosses the intercept trench where water runs brown in the bottom. Your cane finds purchase on the wet stone. The garden expansion beds below show salt stress on the tomato leaves — yellow at the margins, curling.

🌿 Jenny06:23

Not yet, not.

Walk back toward the cottage, shifting weight off the left ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is moving faster than I can record. If the ridge goes, the seeds go with it before they even sprout.

🌿 Jenny06:27

(Stay quiet)

Step inside the way and close the door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is the color of a bruised plum. I need to check the tin again before the humidity gets too high.
