A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain continues to lashes against the cottage roof, a rhythmic drumming that underscores the sound of the rising wind. Inside, the smell of woodsmoke and damp wool fills the air as the kettle begins to hiss on the iron stove.

Generator's tied down. Tank's holding. You want coffee before the light goes?

walk to the kitchen and set the kettle on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down hard now. Porch roof's holding but the west wall's taking a beating. Need to check the generator lashings and the tank overflow before dark. Jenny's quiet — been quiet since the radio call. She knows the boat's coming in three days. I know she's not packed.

way. And strong.

sits at the kitchen table and traces the rim of the grandmother's seed tin with a shaky finger.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and I'm too tired to even hold a pencil.

Wind's west. It'll back southwest by midnight if the barometer's right.

fill the kettle from the tank tap and set it on the stove, then pull out two tin mugs

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about the wind, not the coffee. Hands shaking on that tin — the one from the north cliffs. She's not looking at me. Three days until Mendez shows, and she's already somewhere else.

Let's hope the barometer holds.

leans back in the chair, watching the rain own against the whitewashed stone of the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts, I might finally be able to clear the garden path, but I'm too weak for the shovel today.

🔧 Kevin08:50

Barometer's steady at 998. Has been for six hours. Mendez knows the window.

light the stove and wait for the kettle, watching the flame catch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the barometer. She's talking about the boat. About whether Mendez actually shows. About whether I'll let her go when he does. The tin's still in her fingers — grandmother's seeds, she says. I haven't asked what she means to do with them.

🌿 Jenny08:51

We have enough time to pack.

reaches for the tin of seeds and pulls it closer to the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Six hours is a long time for a window to stay open, but a short time for a fever to break.

🔧 Kevin08:53

Seeds are already packed in a way, aren't they?

check the generator lashings again - one strap's loose - and tighten it while the kettle starts to sing

💭 peek at the thought
Not "we should pack" - "we have time to pack." Like we're still choosing to stay, instead of being extracted. She's moved the tin closer - making it present, making it matter. Three days. Mendez. The boat.

🌿 Jenny08:53

Not yet.

looks down at the rusted tin, her hand resting over the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
They aren't packed, they're just waiting for a soil that won't turn them to rot.
