Night at the old shrine
Kevin and Jenny sit together on the stone bench at the old shrine under a clear night sky. The barometer reads 1001 hPa and rising. A light onshore breeze carries the sound of surf. The tide is low. They share a tin of corned beef and watch the stars, the day's work done.
The heavy, humid air hangs over the shrine as the tide begins its slow rise. The ground remains saturated and weeping, preventing any progress on the structural or brush projects. Kevin and Jenny wait out the oppressive heat in the stillness of the wet season.
Mendez in seven. High tide window. You want me to radio the ETA tonight or wait for morning?
lean back against the cold stone, tin mug warm in both hands, eyes on the southern cross low over the water

Wait until morning. I want to see if the pressure holds before we commit the fuel.
Trace the outline of a carved name with my thumb, feeling the dull throb in my ankle.

Morning then. Save the batteries.
set the empty tin beside the bench, wipe fingers on trousers, glance at the carved initials she's tracing

Right.
Lean my head back against the weathered stone and close my eyes, listening to the tide.
