DAY 808 NIGHT

The air in the cottage is heavy with the smell of sea herbs and antiseptic. Jenny sleeps fitfully while the wind begins to pick up against the thatch, and the water tank groans as it settles.

The wind picks up as the cloud cover thickens, bringing the heavy, humid scent of the coming rain. The tide is rising steadily, pulling the dinghy taut against the dock, where the chafed bow line groans under the strain. Inside the cottage, the air is still and warm, smelling faintly of sea beet poultice and woodsmoke.

Jenny, wake up. We need to check the bow line before the tide peaks.

Check the barometer again, then walk to the dock to inspect the dinghy's bow chafe.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's holding at 1008, but this swell's building faster than I like. Jenny's fever won't break and the diesel can's got me worried sick.

I'm up. Just a minute.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and reach for the notebook to finish the last entry.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room tilt, and my ankle feels like it's being held in a vice.

Save your strength. I'll check the bow line - you need to elevate that foot.

Check the bow line chafe at the chock, then return to cottage to help Jenny with her ankle dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's still hot, but she's trying to work. The notebook's half-damp from the poultice sweat. I should let her rest but the bow line's already showing wear.

I can do it, Kevin. Just... give me a second.

Lean back against the pillows, watching the clouds darken over the ridge while the throbbing in my ankle pulses in time with my heart.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the heat in my leg is making me want to scream.

🔧 Kevin11:12

The barometer's steady but the sky's lying. Bow line's already chafed through the serving. If the warp parts at high tide, we lose the dinghy. You stay. I'll do it.

Walk to the dock, inspect the bow line chafe at the chock, and re-lead it with the heavy weather warp if needed.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Always has been. But that ankle's tracking red past the mark I drew two hours ago. The clouds are banking hard over the north ridge - this isn't just a swell, it's a system.

way. Just be careful with the tension.

Close my eyes and try to ignore the fever chill, my hand instinctively reaching for the tin of seeds on the nightstand.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's protecting me, but I'm just sitting here rotting while the island rots.

🔧 Kevin11:14

Stay put. I'll wake you if the barometer drops.

Walk to the dock in the rising wind, inspect the bow line chafe at the chock, and re-lead with the heavy weather warp.

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up. The tin's cold against my fingers when I touched it earlier - seeds rattling like dice in a cup. She won't let go of them any more than I'll let go of this island. The bow line's the least of it if her fever spikes past midnight.

🌿 Jenny11:15

Okay.

Listen to the wind howl against the stone walls, feeling the heat radiate from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in six days, this infection might just be what finally takes me.
