A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
The rain intensifies from the west, forcing the work indoors or under heavy cover. Kevin struggles with the dinghy rigging in the rising winds, while Jenny manages to begin her survey on the ridge despite the downpour.
I'm back. It's going to pour any minute.
Walk into the kitchen and set the notebook on the table, then open the cupboard to check the remaining supplies.

Coffee's hot. Tank's full.
Walk to the porch and check the shortwave aerial connection where the spare insulator was taped, then start the generator.

Thanks.
Pour a cup of coffee and lean against the counter, watching him through the window.

Insulator's taped and snug. Generator's warming up.
Adjust the generator choke as it catches, then step back to let it idle while I scan the aerial wires for chafe.

Don't let it run too long if the wind picks up. The shelter's flimsy.
Take a slow sip of the hot coffee and glance at the seed trays under the window.

Twenty minutes. Then I'll move it inside the door if we need more.
Check the generator oil level while it's running, then glance at the seed trays and the barometer on the wall.

The barometer is falling. We should probably get the porch cleared before the west wind hits.
Move the seed trays a few inches further from the window to shield them from the coming chill.

Right. You take the trays inside, I'll lash the porch gear.
Shut off the generator, coil the starter cord, and start stacking the porch loose gear — rope, tarp, tape, coax — against the kitchen wall, tying it off to the porch post.
