← Day 81

the old shrine · day 81 · night

the low tide walk

The tide has reached its lowest point, revealing the rocky floor of the tide pools. The air is cooling down.

Kevin spent the low tide scouting the southern tide pools, gathering limpets and ensuring the dinghy's way was secure. Jenny remained at the shrine, meticulously sketching the intricate lichen patterns on the weathered stone in her notebook as the wind shifted direction.

(to himself, quiet) Low tide. Good window.

walk along the exposed tide pools toward the south beach, scanning the rocks for limpets and checking the dinghy's mooring from the water's edge

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's out. Kelp forests exposed, limpets thick on the rock. Good foraging if the weather holds. But the barometer's falling and that southwest swell Kevin noted last week is building. Need to check the dinghy lines again before dark.

🌿 Jenny13:11

The wind is turning, Kevin. Come in.

sit on a flat stone at the shrine, open the notebook, and sketch the lichen patterns on the weathered rock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the damp again while I'm sitting here with ghosts. The way is dropping; he should feel the pressure.

🔧 Kevin13:15

Coming.

turn and walk back up the ridge toward the cottage, glancing at the barometer on the porch as he passes

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's backing southwest, temperature dropping. That swell'll be pushing into the cove by midnight. Dinghy's still on the mooring with that loose ring.

🌿 Jenny13:15

Jenny — sharpen a pencil and begin drawing the intricate, way way the lichen clings to the surface of the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's coming in. The barometer doesn't lie; that storm is going to break before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin13:16

(stopping a few paces away, voice low) Wind's shifting. Going to check the dinghy lines before it gets dark.

continue toward the cottage, then cut down toward the dock, boots loose on the wet grass as the first drops of rain begin to fall

💭 peek at the thought
She's focused. Good. Means she's not stewing. Wind's up now — can hear it in the grasses behind the shrine. That mooring ring won't hold if the wind veers and the tide comes in fast.

🌿 Jenny13:17

Don't stay out long! The rain is starting!

close the notebook quickly to protect the sketches from the damp and stand up, brushing grit from my jeans.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays out there when the squall hits, he'll get soaked. 1012 hPa is falling too fast.

🔧 Kevin13:19

Won't.

scramble down the slick rocks to the water's edge, crowbar in hand, working the loose mooring ring in its mortise before the swell builds

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's cold. She'll head back to the stove. I've got maybe twenty minutes of light and the tide's still out — can reach the mooring ring from the rocks if I'm quick.

🌿 Jenny13:19

Just watch the swell!

run back to the cottage, grab the heavy tarp from the porch, and head for the dock to cover the gear.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stubborn. That dinghy will be lost if the wind catches it and the ring is not right.
