A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The humidity is a heavy weight over the cottage, as the flat, leaden sky thickens with the coming wet season. The tide is high, the water lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings. Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing despite the poultice, while Kevin prepares to tackle the garden trench before the rain hits.

🔧 Kevin12:42

Kevin — walk to the east shutter, pick up the 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut, then head to the northeast garden wall with mattock and greenheart offcuts

💭 peek at the thought
The soil's too wet for the trench to hold. Need to drive the greenheart sheet-piling first, then dig behind it. Got the 150mm through-bolt staged at the east shutter — last one. Radio window's coming up on 2182. Mendez didn't answer last time. Jenny's ankle needs checking again before dark.

The water is just going to bypass that trench, Kevin.

Sit on the porch steps, rubbing my throbbing ankle while watching the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to the wall again while the ground is literally turning to soup. He thinks a bolt will hold back the island.

🔧 Kevin12:44

Mendez at high tide. Then I'll find the spring.

walk to the cottage, pick up the shortwave radio handset, tune to 2182 kHz, key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's weeping uphill — water's coming through the slope, not over it. Sheet-piling the wall won't stop it if the spring line's shifted. Need to find where it's daylighting. Radio first, then walk the slope with the auger.

🌿 Jenny12:45

The spring isn't going anywhere, but the tide is coming in fast.

Sketch the erosion patterns forming on the ridge in my notebook, my hand shaking slightly from the exhaustion.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking to the air again like the mainland is actually listening to a man on a sinking rock.

🔧 Kevin12:47

Radio's on the shelf. Tune to 2182.

walk to the kitchen, pick up the shortwave radio, switch to 2182 kHz, listen for carrier sense

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's rising fast, spring's fine, but that crack she traced past the stability line... three soil pockets dissolving. And her hand's shaking worse now. The bow line's groaning worse with this tide. Need to radio Mendez now, not wait for high tide window.

🌿 Jenny12:49

I heard you. It's just white noise today.

Lean against the whitewashed stone wall, listening to the hiss of the speaker.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the frequency is a lifeline, but the static is the only thing talking back.

🔧 Kevin12:49

Nothing. Three days at high tide, two-hour window. That's what we got.

set the mic down, walk to the porch door, look at the tide line on the beach

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing but static. Mendez isn't answering. Could be his radio's down, could be propagation, could be he's not there. Three days he said. Two-hour window at high tide. That's the only hard data we have. Her ankle's bad, the slope's moving, and I'm standing here with a mic in my hand talking to air.

🌿 Jenny12:51

Two hours isn't enough to stabilize the ridge if the rain starts again.

Trace the swelling on my ankle with my thumb, wincing at the heat of the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in four days, the water will take the garden.

🌿 Jenny12:53

Jenny — pick up the tin of seeds from the table, feeling the cold metal against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us is heavier than the clouds.
