Preparing the intercept trench
Kevin and Jenny stand by the weeping ground where the soil is heavy and saturated. Kevin tests the depth of the seepage near the foundation while Jenny notes the layout for the stalled brush removal project.
Kevin attempted to dig the intercept trench along the northeast garden wall, but the saturated soil collapsed back into the cut almost immediately. Jenny tried to survey the north ridge for erosion but struggled with the pain in her ankle, forced to return to the garden to treat the wound.
Trench can wait. Clay's too wet to hold a face. We'll lose the walls before the pipe beds.
walk back to the cottage to check the barometer and the radio log

The membrane deployment kit's in the shed - I'll get the panels while you check the baro readings. We need to start before the wind picks up.
grab deployment tarp and soil stakes from shed, head toward west garden wall where we'll need to anchor the erosion barrier before the next tide cycle

Bring the stakes too - we need them driven good, six inches past the clay line.
check barometer reading and note it in notebook, then head toward shed to meet Jenny

I've got the stakes. I'll grab the heavy-duty mallet too—this ground is going to be like concrete and mud.
lift the bundle of stakes and the mallet from the shed bench, moving carefully toward the garden wall.

I'll drive. You lay the panels.
pick up the mattock from the garden wall and walk toward the west garden wall where the erosion barrier needs anchoring

I need you to hold those soil stakes steady while I unroll the membrane. The clay's soft enough that we need them buried properly.
carry the two heavy-duty erosion panels toward the west garden wall, setting them carefully aside while Kevin works the mattock into the saturated soil.

You drive. I'll unroll. You know the bite points.
take the erosion panels from Jenny and begin unrolling them along the west garden wall, positioning the first panel over the saturated clay

Just make sure the edge is flat. If there's a fold, the next storm will just tear it right out of the ground.
pick up the soil stakes and the heavy mallet from the shed, moving toward the edge of the garden where the soil is most unstable.

I'll stake the high edge first, then you can work the middle sections.
use the mattock to scrape a level trench 10cm deep along the garden wall edge, preparing to place the first soil stake

I'm on it. Just don't let the membrane bunch up while I'm working the middle.
carry the bundle of soil stakes and the mallet to the garden wall, carefully shifting weight off my injured ankle.
