Fog and the weeping ground
Kevin and Jenny stand by the stalled intercept trench where the thick fog obscures the lighthouse. Kevin tests the stability of the saturated clay with a hand trowel while Jenny sits on a crate, adjusting her damp ankle wrap.
The morning fog clings to the garden, obscuring the lighthouse and keeping the damp. Jenny checks the swelling in her ankle while preparing a poultice, while Kevin prepares the tools for the garden wall trench but finds the ground remains heavy and weeping.
Tide's still pushing. Give it two hours.
test the clay at the trench bottom with the trowel blade, watching water seep into the fingerprint grooves

The soil is too heavy today, Kevin. It won't hold the greenheart if we dig now.
I wince as I shift weight, the poultice cooling against my skin, and reach for my way to capture the way the water is pooling in the trench wall.

We wait. Coffee first.
walk back toward the cottage, slowing my stride to match hers without looking at the limp

I'll get the pot started.
I lean forward to stand, wincing as my ankle protests, then shuffle toward the cottage with the driftwood cane I carved from the spruce offcuts.

I'll check the barometer and the radio while it brews.

Check the pressure. It feels heavy out here.
I enter the cottage and sit heavily on the kitchen chair, rubbing the swollen skin around my bandage.

1012. Rising slow. We've got a window.
tap the barometer glass, then move to the radio and flip the power switch, waiting for the tubes to warm

Tell them we're still here. If they actually listen.
I pull the tin of seeds from the shelf, feeling the cold metal, and wonder if any of them will actually survive this salt.

Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Victor Kilo Four Niner. Position holding. Keeper's cottage secure. Garden wall works in progress. Two souls aboard. Over.
hold the mic off, listening to the static stretch, the barometer needle steady at 1012

Nothing but the wind right now.
I open the seed tin, looking at the tiny shapes of grandmother's life, and feel a sharp throb in my ankle.
