Midday Heat Peak

The tide begins to turn as the temperature rises. Kevin needs a break for water, and Jenny moves toward the cottage to cool down.

The heat is heavy as the dry spell continues, leaving the garden soil baked hard. Kevin attempts to drill pilot holes for the garden wall trench but finds the earth far too stubborn for the hand drill. Jenny rests at the cottage, managing her swelling in the stifling heat.

Six piles. That's the line. We'll let it breathe.

💭 peek at the thought
Ground's still weeping. Every pile I drive fills with water before the next one seats. Jenny's ankle can't take another hour on this slope. Need to call the wall at six piles and let the clay settle — or we lose the whole face.

The ground is too heavy for a line today, Kevin.

Sit on the cottage steps, lifting the swollen ankle, and watch the way reclaim the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a line will stop the water, but the soil is already turning to soup.

What if we sheet-pile from the inside instead? Drive the plates first, let them act as a cofferdam, then backfill.

That means driving greenheart in waterlogged earth—you'll bend the plates or miss the holes entirely.

Rub the sea beet poultice into the infected wound, then write in the notebook: "Cofferdam feasibility: zero in saturated clay."

💭 peek at the thought
Cofferdams need dry conditions to drive plates, and I'm watching the soil slosh between my toes.

Then we brace. Use the fallen spruce as a lever, wedge it against each plate as we drive. Takes longer, but we don't bend the wood.

If we use the spruce for bracing, we won't have a mast for the dinghy next month.

Wrap the ankle in a clean cloth, wince as the pressure hits the infection, and stare at the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about way while the island is trying to swallow the whole garden one inch at a time.

🔧 Kevin13:37

The spar's compromised. Epoxy's still tacky. It won't hold a sail in a blow anyway.

💭 peek at the thought
The spruce spar's cracked already — patched with epoxy still tacky. It's a mast or it's a lever, not both. But the dinghy's useless without a wall to protect the garden, and the garden's useless without the wall.

🌿 Jenny13:39

Then we're just waiting for the tide to take the rest.

Lean back against the rough stone and watch the salt wind whip the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is failing—the wood, the plan, my own body.

🔧 Kevin13:39

The tide's turning. Six piles holds the line for now. I'll finish the brace and be back.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The wall's six piles deep and the clay's still weeping behind each one. But six is better than none, and the tide's turning. I'll brace the bow line, then come back and drive the last two before the water rises. The spar can wait — or we'll find another stick.

🌿 Jenny13:41

Just don't overexert yourself.

Close my eyes and try to ignore the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks six piles can hold back the ocean when the earth is literally dissolving.
