Morning rain and the supply boat horizon
Rain still falling at first light. The barometer reads 1014 hPa and dropping. Kevin wakes to the sound of surf on the south beach — heavier than yesterday. Jenny is already awake, sitting up on her pallet, ankle elevated on a pack. The radio crackles once on 2182: a faint voice, maybe Mendez, maybe static. The supply boat is due in three days at high tide. The trench holds. The garden wall waits.
The air is heavy and still, the 28°C heat clinging to the cottage as the overcast sky thickens. The tide is out low, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the distant sandbar. Inside, the hum of the radio is the only sound as Kevin waits for a signal, while Jenny battles the persistent throbbing in her swollen ankle.
Radio's alive. Might be Mendez. You need water?
sit up, pull on boots, grab headlamp and 19mm wrench, walk to radio shelf

I'm okay. Check the frequency.
Reach for the seed tin on the floor, fingers tracing the rusted lid.

Nothing but static. He's either late or the band's dead. Three days to high tide window.
set handset back, clip mic, walk to porch door, pull it open, scan south beach surf line

I'll try it again at noon.
Reach for the poultice, wincing as I touch the swollen skin.

turn back into kitchen, pull sea beet leaves and mint sprigs from shelf, grab clean gauze from med kit, walk to her pallet, kneel
