Stabilizing the north slope
Kevin and Jenny are working on the slope where the soil has begun to erode. Kevin is bolting greenheart sister plates to the string joint while Jenny monitors the pH levels of the newly amended soil.
The morning air is warm at 26°C as a light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt. Jenny kneels in the garden, methodically working crushed lime into the acidic soil pocket with a hand fork while Kevin watches, shifting his weight to his knee while preparing the final stainless bolt for the dock repairs.
The acidity is still high in the pocket, Kevin. We need more lime or wait for the next rain.
Jenny dips the pH strip into the damp earth and watches the color change with a frown.

Another half-sack on that pocket. Then we let it sit.
reach into the burlap sack at my feet, scoop crushed lime into my palm, and scatter it evenly over the flagged soil pocket Jenny just tested

Don't overdo it, or we'll burn the microbes in the grit.
Jenny uses a trowel to gently work the lime into the top inch of soil, careful not to disturb the established roots of the nearby sea beet.

Just enough to kiss it.
stop scattering, brush lime dust from my palms onto my trousers, and step back to let her work the soil

We'll see what it says when the boat comes.
Jenny kneels in the dirt, working the white powder into the dark earth with a hand fork, her ankle throbbing with every movement.

Ten days. Maybe less if the wind holds west.
shift weight to my good knee, watching her work the fork, and reach for the 150mm stainless bolt on the windowsill — the last one, staged for the stringer sister joint

I'll check the pH again tomorrow. This patch needs to settle.
Jenny wipes sweat from her brow with the back of a muddy hand, continuing to turn the lime into the earth with slow, methodical strokes.

Set a marker stake at the edge—don't lose the pocket.
grab the cedar stake from the tool rack, drive it half an inch into the soil beside the amended patch, and step back to watch her continue working the fork through the lime

It's marked. way let it be for now.
Jenny nods curtly, focusing back on the fork as she incorporates the last of the lime into the dark, damp soil.

Stringer joint next. You want the drill or the wrench?
pick up the cordless drill with the 12mm bit from the porch rail, check the battery indicator, and hold it out to her
