Evening visit to the ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip, the trade wind cooling slightly as they head toward the stone circle.

The evening air is warm and still, the light onshore breeze carrying the scent of salt and drying earth. The tide is rising, pushing water toward the dock as the light begins to fade. Kevin and Jenny stand by the old shrine, the weight of the day's labor visible in their postures as they watch the water come in.

Trench held. Yanmar's clean under load. You ready?

Walk up the ridge path toward the shrine, pace slowed to match hers.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving easier than yesterday. Ankle's holding. The light's turning gold on the ridge — good hour for the shrine.

Trench held." (I match his pace, wincing as I shift my weight. The words feel hollow, but they're true.) "And the Yanmar's singing now.

💭 peek at the thought
Eighteen days of talking about building something together, and here we are at the old shrine where I carve my own names into stone. My ankle throbs even when I'm still, but the infection looks clean—thank god for the salt water and those damn antibiotics. Grandmother's seeds are still in that rusted tin, untouched, and I can't keep pretending this garden behind the cottage is what they deserve.

Singing's a strong word. Runs. No shake at three thousand.

Reach the stone circle, set a hand on the tallest stone — warm from the day's sun.

💭 peek at the thought
She's masking it. The wince at each left step. Stubborn as the engine was before the sleeve.

🌿 Jenny01:47

"Better than rattling apart." (I stop at the edge of the ring, looking down at the weathered stones, my eyes tracing the cliff-edge below.)

stand at the ring of stones, looking out toward the water while catching my breath

💭 peek at the thought
Three thousand without a shake. That's a win, I suppose. But the soil on the north ridge is still the question, and my stomach is growling loud enough to competition out the wind. I need to eat.

Trust letter done?

Crouch beside the 'E' stone, fingers brushing the weathered letter.

💭 peek at the thought
The carved stone with 'E' still there. My scrap wood carving beside it. Pine resin seal holding against salt.

🌿 Jenny01:49

"Drafted after radio check." (I shift my weight to my good leg, feeling the sharp throb in my ankle.)

lean against a weathered stone, watching the horizon where the light is fading

💭 peek at the thought
It's sitting on the table, waiting for a boat that might not come for ten days. I should have finished the report hours ago.

Read it to me.

Stay crouched, back to the wind, watching her face in the failing light.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll send it. Or burn it. Either way it's staged. The boat comes in eight days — high tide, two hour window. Time to decide.

Jenny — pull the way paper from my pocket, smoothing the edges against my thigh

💭 peek at the thought
He wants to hear the words, but they're just paper and salt right now. I'm too tired for the performance of it.그런SAY: "It's just logistics, Kevin. Dates and fuel." (I look down at my hands, fingers stained with dirt from the north ridge.)
