Morning Inspection and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny stand by the newly raised garden wall as the trade wind picks up. The dry air is warm against the soil, and the shade cloth is steady over the heirloom rows.

Kevin inspected the garden spillway and checked the water levels as the tide began to rise. Jenny monitored the soil pH in the garden beds and noted the salt intrusion in the lower depressions. A rat was discovered in the pantry, scratching through the stored food.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Wall's good. South anchor on the shade cloth needs a new stake and a heavier batten before lunch.

walk to the shed, pull a greenheart offcut and a 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut, then head to the south garden corner

💭 peek at the thought
Wall's holding. Two extra courses of greenheart and the lime-mortar cap shed the spray clean. Shade cloth anchors are the weak point — crab shredded the south corner last week, and the wind's picking up. Need to re-stake before noon heat drives the gusts harder.

🌿 Jenny02:05

I'll check the tension on the other side. The soil is finally holding the moisture well here.

primary the sketchbook into her waistband and limp toward the south corner of the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt crust is cracking like parchment today. If I don't secure that cloth now, the wind will rips the seedlings right out. My own is throbbing with the tide, but I can't let the island take the garden before we've even started.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Take the east row too. North stake's loose in the clay.

drive the greenheart offcut into the south corner at a slight angle, then thread the 150mm bolt through the shade cloth grommet and the timber, snug the nyloc with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side still. Ankle's better but not right. Should've made her sit this one out, but she won't. At least the soil's holding — lime beds reading 6.8, that's the first time in a year.

🌿 Jenny02:07

Good anchor. The east row's clay's been shifting since the last storm—I'll check those stakes this afternoon.

walk to the east row shade cloth, fingers already testing the timber stubs in the ground for give.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay holds like it did at the shrine—tight one day, loose the next. I need to see the east row before the wind shifts. My ankle is already warm with infection, but these stakes won't hold in loose soil.

🔧 Kevin02:08

Spade's by the wall if you need it. Trench check's at high tide — I'll run it.

wipe hands on trousers, pick up the notebook from the garden wall, flip to the soil pH log page, scan the lime bed readings one more time

💭 peek at the thought
East row clay's been weeping since the intercept trench backed up. She'll find the stakes loose — three of them at least. Good she's catching it now before the next blow. I'll check the trench at high tide like I meant to.

🌿 Jenny02:09

Keep an eye on the water level. I don't want the salt getting into the seedlings.

kneel by the east row stake, pressing a hand into the earth to feel the depth of the moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
High tide is way too late for the trenches. If the tank overflows again, I'll lose the whole section. My ankle is screaming with every step on this uneven dirt.

🔧 Kevin02:10

Spillway's on the list. High tide in forty minutes.

tuck notebook under arm, walk toward the intercept trench at the north garden wall, eyes on the spillway outlet where the copper pipe meets the grass slope

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt's the killer — one high tide over the berm and the tomato roots burn. Trench held last cycle but the chalk seam's weeping. Need to clear the spillway silt before the next spring tide series.

🌿 Jenny02:12

Jenny is quiet for a moment.

flagged: empty

Forty minutes isn't enough if the
