A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The midday heat is oppressive as the tide recedes, exposing the rocky flats. Kevin checks the drainage system to ensure the dry spell hasn't caused silt buildup, while Jenny monitors the progress of her ankle in the shade.

🔧 Kevin02:23

Jenny, the intercept trench held. Chalk and slate line took the pressure fine.

Walk to the garden corner where the trench runs, crouch to inspect the slurry line, then check the spillway outlet for sediment buildup.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's already gone out, leaving the spillway dry. Good. Now I can check that trench properly without water rushing in.

Check the spillway again. If that clogs, the whole system back-flows into the garden beds.

wipe sweat from my brow and lean against the whitewashed stone, shifting my weight off my left leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the trench held, the seeds won't wash away today, but my own is still screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin02:25

Will do. Let me clear the outlet before the next tide comes in.

Check the spillway grate for debris, clear sediment buildup, verify water flows freely through the system.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. That trench held, but if the spillway clogs, all that water's going to salt-amend my garden instead of draining where it should.

🌿 Jenny02:25

Don't overdo it. The water is already high and I don't need a flood.

sit on the' steps and pull out my way, tracing the way the light hits the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful again, but I'm just thinking about the salt in that water.

🔧 Kevin02:27

I'll just give it a quick look-over. Don't need to get muddy boots in the trench today.

Walk to the garden wall spillway, peek down the outlet to confirm water's draining freely, then head back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the garden flooding again. I should just spot-check the spillway, not dig it out proper.

🌿 Jenny02:27

Just be quick. I'm going to go inside and soak this thing.

watch him go from the porch, then start to limp toward the kitchen to get salt water.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is moving. If the tank stays full, I can survive another week.

🔧 Kevin02:28

Back in a minute.

Check the spillway outlet — clear any debris blocking the copper pipe end, confirm water's running clear through the grate, then walk back to the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower on that ankle. The poultice must be wearing off. Good she's staying off it.

🌿 Jenny02:29

Is it clear then?

walk into the kitchen, fill a pot with water from the tank, and set it on the stove to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back already. I hope he actually cleared it and not just looked at it.

🔧 Kevin02:31

Clear as a bell. No clogging at the outlet — water's running straight through.

Nod toward the garden, then walk slowly back down the cottage steps toward the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
The spillway's clear, but I can hear her pot starting up. She's been managing that ankle infection pretty well.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny02:31

Good. I need to start the soak.

sit at the kitchen table, pull off my socks, and wait for the water to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. If that pipe stays clear, I don't have to worry about the tank dropping today.
