A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny06:33

The pressure is dropping too fast, Kevin. I need to get the trenches finished before the wind shifts.

Sit at the wooden table, open the tin of seeds, and begin sorting the heirloom varieties from the common ones, sketching each one in the own.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle is throbbing, a dull, rhythmic pulse that matches the heat in my head. I need to debride it properly, but the salt water sting is a lot today. Grandmother's tin is sitting on the table—heavy, silent, demanding. If I wait for the soil to be perfect, the seeds will rot in the tin. If I plant now, the storm might take them. I'm tired of the indecision. I need to see the morphology of these seeds in the light again.

🔧 Kevin06:37

Aye, the trenches'll hold if we get them dug now. I'll check the seaward bolts after.

walk to the dock and inspect the mooring ring bolts while Jenny sorts seeds make plan: secure dock, finish trenches, check generator test protocol before dark

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping sharp again - southwest swell coming. Should've secured the dock pilings already. Jenny's right, trenches need finishing before the lines take load from the swell lag.

🌿 Jenny06:39

Don't way too long on the dock, the tide is coming in fast and the heat is lying.

Pick up a single heirloom tomato seed, hold it up to the magnifying glass, and begin sketching the intricate ridges of its surface in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the bolts while I'm looking at the future of this island. These seeds are so small—so much history in a tiny husk. If I put them in that parched earth, I'll never forgive myself if they don't take.

🔧 Kevin06:41

You're right. Dock won't wait either. Give me ten minutes - I'll get these pilings secured and be back.

check the barometer reading and head to the dock immediately inspect dock pilings for rot progression and secure with available bronze sleeves

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's rising faster than I thought - should've checked the dock hours ago. Heat's baking everything, and Jenny's right, I'm taking too long. That southwest swell won't wait.

🌿 Jenny06:41

Be quick. The air is turning heavy, Kevin.

Trace the edge of the sketch with a fine pencil, then reach for the salt water to soothe the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is a physical weight, pressing down on the stone walls. My ankle is screaming at me, but the seeds are screaming louder. I can't let another day pass with just sketches and half-finished plans.

🔧 Kevin06:45

I'll be back quick. Check those trenches while I'm gone - secure the corners.

check pressure drop rate and head to dock immediately secure south piling with greenheart sister plates before tide hits

💭 peek at the thought
Air pressure's dropping faster than I'm moving. Salt water for the wound - she knows what she's doing. Should've listened to her about the trenches. 1037 dropping hard, southwest swell building.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny06:45

Just don't stay out there if the wind starts to pick.

Dip a clean cloth into the salt water and press it against the dejected ankle, wincing at the sharp bite.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is an eternity when the barometer is dropping that fast. The salt water will sting like hell, but I need to see clearly. If I don't clean this infection out now, I won't be able to finish the trenches tomorrow anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:47

Aye, I'll be back. If it gets bad, I'll radio you from the dinghy.

head to dock immediately secure south piling with through-bolts and check seaward bolts for load testing

💭 peek at the thought
Wind picking up fast - barometer must be below 1030 now. Tide's rising, salt water burning her ankle. Should've finished the trenches already.
