Broken tap and fallen spruce

Kevin and Jenny stand at the north piling in the still morning air, tide well out, the broken 16mm tap shank flush in the cured epoxy mortise. A heavy spruce trunk lies across the garden path farther up the slope, its branches tangled in the shade cloth anchors, blocking the route to the ridge. The barometer holds at 1037 hPa, the sun already hot on the water, and the only sound is the occasional snap of brittle rope fibers as they ready the left-hand drill bit and penetrating oil.

Kevin successfully drilled out the broken 16mm tap from the north piling mortise using a left-hand bit and penetrating oil, then split the fallen spruce trunk into movable sections with pry bar and sledgehammer. Jenny planted grandmother's heirloom seeds (tomato, pepper, sea beet) in pre-prepared trays with amended soil and charcoal layer, watering them in gently.

The left-hand bit's ready. We'll get this tap out, then we'll tackle that tree." "Kevin, get the sledgehammer and the block of wood. We need to make a strike plate for the tap." "After we get this tap, we'll need to clear a path to the ridge beds. But first - let's not lose a finger to impatience.

💭 peek at the thought
The tap's still in there, and my ankle's already screaming from the walk up. That trunk's going to take everything I've got to move it - but grandmother never built gardens by asking for help. Twelve more days until the supply boat, and I need those heirloom seeds in the ground before then. The soil's ready, limed and amended, but I can't do this with one hand tied behind my back - literally. The trunk's blocking the ridge path, but it's also the only cover from the sun. I can't afford to waste energy moving it today - not when the seeds are waiting in their tin and the soil's drinking greedily despite all my work.

Bit first. Hammer's backup.

retrieve left-hand drill bit and penetrating oil from tool roll, apply oil liberally to tap shank and let it penetrate, then set the bit square on the broken tap center and start drilling slow with steady pressure

💭 peek at the thought
Left-hand bit's the right call — if it bites, the tap backs out. If it doesn't, we're drilling it out anyway. Strike plate's insurance; epoxy's harder than the tap steel but the shank might shear clean. Either way, tide's our clock.

Good. Keep that pressure steady - we don't want to wander and break the bit." "Kevin, when that tap comes free, we need to move fast on that trunk. The seeds can't wait.

💭 peek at the thought
The oil's working - I can see it cutting through the corrosion. Good. Now I need to move that trunk before the sun gets worse, and I need the seeds in the ground before the supply boat arrives. Grandmother always said the hardest part was starting, not finishing. The left-hand bit's biting - slowly but surely. My ankle's throbbing, but the antibiotics are holding. I can't afford to waste time or energy today.

Bit's holding center. Give it another minute.

maintain steady drilling pressure, clear flutes every few turns, watch for the tap to break free and back out

💭 peek at the thought
Drill's biting. Epoxy dust coming up grey-white. Tap shank's 16mm — left-hand bit's 8mm, so we're coring the center. If the flutes clear, the tap walks out. If not, we step up to a 12mm left-hand and chase the walls. Either way, the bolt hole's getting oversized. Greenheart plates are pre-drilled for 20mm.

Clear those flutes - keep the chips away from the cut." "Kevin, when that tap comes free, we're moving that tree. I've got the seed trays ready, and we need to plant before the afternoon heat sets in.

💭 peek at the thought
The bit's holding true - this is the moment. One more minute and the tap will free itself, then we move hard on that trunk. Grandmother's seeds are waiting in the tin, and I can't let another day slip by with them still buried in paperwork instead of soil. My ankle's hot again, but the antibiotics are working. I need to plant those seeds before the soil settles too much more, before the ridge cracks widen further.

💭 peek at the thought
Chips packing the flutes — that's how you snap a bit. Clear, drill, clear, drill. Tap's moving now, feel the resistance drop. Once it backs free, we chase threads with the 20mm tap, bolt the sisters, done. Then the trunk. Chainsaw's fueled, chain's sharp. Garden path clears fast if we buck it right.

Clean work. Now we move that tree - I've got seeds to plant." "Kevin, grab the pry bar and the sledgehammer. We're clearing a path to the north ridge beds."

💭 peek at the thought
It's free - perfectly done. Now I can plant grandmother's seeds properly, with both hands and both feet. The tap comes out clean, no fragments left behind. My ankle's burning but manageable, and the seeds are ready in the tin. That trunk has been blocking the ridge path since yesterday's squall, and I've got 813 days of heirloom genetics waiting to go into soil that's been limed and amended just right. No more excuses.

Tap's out. Tree splits clean — grab the sections and move them south.

position pry bar under trunk end, lift to create gap, place sledgehammer strike plate against trunk and deliver measured blows to split wood into manageable sections

💭 peek at the thought
Tap's free, shank clean. Tree's blocking the ridge path where soil's stable for planting. Need to split it fast before heat sets in. Charcoal layer in trays helps with drainage, seeds need cool soil. Split trunk into thirds, roll sections to south slope for splitting later.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🌿 Jenny10:35

Good splitting. Move those sections to the south pile - we'll deal with them properly tomorrow." "Now, let's get these seeds in the ground while we've got daylight and cool soil. I've got the trays ready and the amended mix prepared.

Collect split trunk sections and move to designated south pile for later processing fill seed trays with soil mix containing charcoal layer and proper drainage plant grandmother's heirloom seeds (tomato, pepper, sea beet) in pre-watered soi

💭 peek at the thought
The tap's fully extracted and the tree's splitting cleanly. My ankle's throbbing but I can't let it slow us down - grandmother's seeds are waiting in that tin, and I've waited too long already. The soil's ready, the drainage's working, and the ridge beds haven't seen plantings since I arrived. That trunk's blocking everything - access to the ridge, potential firewood, and now it's becoming debris we need to move. Kevin's got the right idea taking it south where we can process it properly.

Seeds in. Water them in now.

fill seed trays with amended soil mix, plant grandmother's heirloom seeds at proper spacing, water gently with fine spray from watering can

💭 peek at the thought
Trunk's moved. Seeds in ground while soil's cool. Afternoon heat wilts trays fast. Need to water gently, cover with clear plastic dome for humidity. Check drainage holes. Tomato's first row, pepper behind, sea beet along the ridge line where soil holds moisture.
