The Driftwood Crate

The tide is receding, leaving a heavy waterlogged wooden crate wedged against the rocks in the surf. Kevin and Jenny watch as the waves foam around the splintered wood while the sun begins to beat down on the sand.

The sun beats down on the south beach as the tide recedes, exposing the rocks where the waterlogged crate is wedged. Kevin provides stability for Jenny as she winces through the throbbing pain, and she manages to wedge the crowbar into a narrow gap between the wood and the stone. They work together to pry the crate loose before the tide returns.

Don't touch it yet, the tide is still shifting.

Walk toward the water's edge, limping only slightly, and squint against the sun to inspect the crate's markings.

💭 peek at the thought
Another gift from the sea, and it looks far too heavy for my ankle. I don't have the strength to fight the current today.

🔧 Kevin11:25

Take your time. I'll get the crowbar and rope from the shed.

walk up to the cottage and retrieve the crowbar and a length of the new half-inch rope from the workshop

💭 peek at the thought
The crate's been there since the storm three nights back. Salt-crusted, heavy, riding low — whatever's inside took on water. Jenny's right to wait; the surge could still roll it and crush a hand against the rock. But the markings might tell us where it came from before the sea decides to take it back.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Bring the crowbar, we might need to pry it loose before the tide comes back up.

Kneel on the dry sand near the tide line and start a quick sketch of the crate's position in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's the supply boat's crate, maybe they are early. If it's just debris, I'm wasting energy.

🔧 Kevin11:30

Got it.

return to the south beach with the crowbar and rope, setting them on dry sand above the wrack line

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it before we move anything. Smart — if the contents matter to the trust, they'll want the recovery context. The tide's dropping fast now; we've got maybe two hours of workable beach before it turns.

🌿 Jenny11:31

Help me get some leverage. I can't put weight on this ankle.

Standing up slowly, wincing as the infection throbs, and wading into the shallow water to reach the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavy. The wood is swollen with salt water. I hope it's not just more useless driftwood.

🔧 Kevin11:33

Here, lean on me.

move to the crate and position myself beside Jenny, offering steady support under her arm

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's already better from the poultice, but she's pushing too hard. The infection's still tender. I should have brought the spare crutch from the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny11:34

Just hold the weight while I get the bar in.

Reach for the crowbar and try to jam the metal tip between the crate and the rock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, which makes me feel fragile. I'm not made of glass.

🔧 Kevin11:34

Let me drive it. You hold the line.

take the crowbar from Jenny, set the tip in the widest gap between crate and rock, and strike the bar's head with the sledgehammer from my belt

💭 peek at the thought
The wood's swollen tight against the basalt. Salt and sand have cemented the joint. She'll need a hammer swing to drive the bar home, not just body weight — and her ankle won't take the reaction force.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:35

Slow down, the wood is saturated and soft.

Grab the rope and loop it around the body of the crate so it doesn't roll when it breaks free.

💭 peek at the thought
If he hits it too hard, the wood will split and everything inside will be lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:36

Working the seam.

shift the crowbar along the crate's bottom edge, levering gently at each joint to widen the gap without splintering the wood further

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — waterlogged timber crushes under the bar. The ends are already splintering where I struck. Need to work the gap wider along the whole edge before we pry, or we'll just shred the planks and lose whatever's inside to the surf.
