Midday Heat
The sun remains hidden behind the grey clouds as the tide begins to turn. Jenny returns from the ridge with her notes while Kevin finishes the first set of plates.
The tide is steadily rising against the dock pilings, bringing a small cluster of jellyfish into the bay. Kevin and Jenny stand at the dock in the midday heat, planning the day's work on the north ridge monitoring and the dock's structural repairs before the supply boat arrives in eight days.
The north ridge has extended another five-tenths of a meter. The stability line is compromised.

Copy that. Five-tenths.
wipe drill shavings off the first plate, measure the bolt hole centers again, then walk to the north piling to check the scarf joint waterline while the tide's still low enough to see it
