The Morning Tide Inspection

Kevin and Jenny stand on the south dock as the overcast sky lightens over the island. Jenny rests her bandaged ankle on a piling while Kevin examines the newly sistered joint for any movement.

The tide is receding quickly, exposing slick rocks and kelp-draped pilings. Jenny limps toward the edge of the dock, clutching the railing for stability as her ankle throbs with every step. Kevin pushes the wheelbarrow down the ramp, keeping the tire deflated to prevent it from sinking into the soft sand.

🌿 Jenny14:23

The bolts are tight for now, but the rot is deep in the core.

Jenny reaches out to press her palm against the timber, feeling for any slight give in the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If this wood doesn't hold, the whole jetty goes into the surf with the next surge.

Holds for now. Port side's the same story — just hasn't let go yet.

tap the sister plate with the wrench handle, listening for hollow notes, then crouch to sight along the joint line at water level

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The sister plate distributes load but the original stringer's heartwood is gone below the waterline. We're buying time, not fixing it. The real job is driving new pilings, and we don't have the gear for that.

🌿 Jenny14:25

We need more stone for the base. The tide is Taking the clay too fast.

Jenny shifts her weight, wincing as the ankle throbs, and looks out toward the fracture line on the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the hardware while the island is literally dissolving under his feet.

🔧 Kevin14:25

Stone's at the south beach. Three, four trips with the wheelbarrow if the tide holds. Your ankle first.

straighten, wipe wrench on rag, hold out a hand toward her good arm

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg hard. The antibiotic course finished yesterday — if the heat's tracking past the ankle, we're in trouble. And she's looking at the ridge instead of her foot.

🌿 Jenny14:27

I can manage. Get the wheelbarrow ready.

Jenny declines the hand, bracing herself against the piling as she turns toward the beach.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a few trips will fix a foundation that's melting.

🔧 Kevin14:27

Wheelbarrow's on the dock. Left the tire soft for the sand.

turn toward the dock, unlash the wheelbarrow from the cleat, check the tire pressure with a thumb, start walking it down the jetty toward the beach access

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. The infection cleared but the joint's still hot, and she's walking on fractured ground. Let her prove it — but I'm not two steps behind.

🌿 Jenny14:29

I'll meet you at the edge of the tide.

Jenny starts to limp down the dock, keeping one hand on the railing for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
Soft tires for the sand, at least he's thinking about the physics.

🔧 Kevin14:29

Kevin — wheel the barrow down the ramp onto the beach, park it above the wrack line, scan the shoreline for the flattest stones in the size range we need

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than yesterday. The limp's deeper. Tide's falling — gives us maybe two hours of firm sand before the clay shelf exposes.
