MORNING DAY 829

The fog thickens and the smell of rain carries on the wind as the tide holds at its peak.

Kevin monitored the shortwave radio from the cottage while Jenny limped to the garden to inspect the south slope beds before the rain intensified. Kevin heard only a news report about a jet crash in Florida and the steady barometer reading. Jenny reached the garden but found the south slope drainage channel overwhelmed, with new weeping clay visible at the foundation line.

🌿 Jenny16:23

The tank is full, but we need to check the way.

wrap my ankle in a clean cloth and limp to the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is rising faster than the forecast, and I'm running out of places to keep things dry.

Tank's at the lip. Overflow ran clean last night.

Walk to the kitchen, pull the kettle off the hook, set it on the stove. Open the wood box, feed the stove two splits of spruce kindling and a round of greenheart. Strike a match, hold it to the shavings until they catch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on that ankle again. The swelling hasn't gone down and she's walking on it like it's nothing. Tank's full though — that's something. The barometer's still dropping and the fog's not lifting. Supply boat's three days out if the captain wasn't lying.

🌿 Jenny16:25

I need to check the garden beds before it pushes into the south slope.

take the lead lantern from the hook and head toward the garden door.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's holding higher than it should, and my ankle's throbbing with every step.

Take the cane. And the radio.

Reach past her to the porch wall, unhook the driftwood cane and the handheld VHF. Hold them out.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not waiting for the fog to lift. Ankle's wrapped but she's favouring it hard, and the south slope turns to soup in this kind of rain. The lantern light won't carry ten feet in this murk.

🌿 Jenny16:27

I'll be back in twenty minutes if the wall holds.

take the cane and the radio, then step out into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't navigate the mud without the support, but the salt-beet won't wait.

🔧 Kevin16:27

Fifteen. Then I'm coming after you.

Watch her through the porch door until the lantern glow dissolves into the fog. Turn back to the kitchen. Lift the kettle lid, peer at the water level. Set a tin mug on the table. Pull the coffee jar down from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. She'll be forty. The south slope's already weeping at the new pockets — saw the clay shine fresh yesterday. Fog's thick enough to swallow the path. She knows the ground but knowing doesn't stop it giving way.

🌿 Jenny16:29

just watch the radio.

use the cane to take my weight and step into the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
Fifteen minutes is a luxury I don't have if the garden wall gets breached.

🔧 Kevin16:29

Kevin — pour hot water into the tin mug, spoon in coffee grounds, stir slow. Set the mug on the table. Pull the shortwave closer, twist the gain up, settle into the chair. Scan 2182, then the trust's working frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already gone. The radio sits silent on the shelf — static and the occasional pop of atmospheric noise. Barometer's at 1030 and falling. Three days to the supply boat if the front doesn't stall them. Kettle's starting to whisper.
