Evening Debrief

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage as the sun begins to dip, preparing the evening meal.

Kevin prepared a lunch of limpets and mackerel in beef fat at the cottage. Jenny struggled with her ankle while sitting to eat, and they both watched the tide rise outside.

🌿 Jenny18:45

The limpets are clean. We'll fry them with the way mackerel.

Jenny slices the limpets into thin strips on the way board, leaning heavily against the counter to take the weight off her left foot.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming and the smell of salt and woodsmoke is making me dizzy; I just want to sit down without the world tilting.

🔧 Kevin18:45

Pan's hot. Corned beef fat still in the skillet from lunch?

walk to the wood stove and check the cast iron skillet, wiping it clean with a cloth before setting it back on the hot plate

💭 peek at the thought
Watching her favour that ankle still. The poultice is holding but she's pushing it. The limpets will help — protein, iron, something hot in the belly before the night drops.

🌿 Jenny18:47

I'll wipe it. We don't want the fish tasting like old salt.

Jenny reaches for the clean cloth, wincing as the movement shoots through her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the grease, he doesn't notice I'm literally shaking from the heat.

🔧 Kevin18:47

Sit. I'll wipe it.

take the cloth from her hand and wipe the skillet clean myself, then drop a spoonful of the rendered corned beef fat into the pan to melt

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Won't sit. Won't ask. The ankle's angry — heat radiating through the gauze even from here. Let her wipe the pan. It's something to do with her hands while I handle the heat.

🌿 Jenny18:49

Thank you.

Jenny sinks onto the wooden chair by the stove, pressing her heel into the cool floorboard.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are steady, methodical—unlike mine, which keep wanting to curl inward against the infection.

🔧 Kevin18:49

Limpets in. Two minutes a side.

drop the limpet strips into the hot fat in a single layer, listening for the sharp sizzle, and reach for the tin of mackerel with the other hand

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She sat. The floorboards are cool from the tank seepage — she knows that. Smart. Now the fat's shimmering. Limpets go in quick, don't crowd the pan. They toughen if you stare at them.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:51

Don't overcook them, they get tough like rubber.

Jenny watches the limpets curl in the pan, her fingers tracing the grain of the way table.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the fat is making my stomach growl, but I'm too tired to move.

🔧 Kevin18:51

Forty seconds.

flip the limpet strips with the spatula, then break the mackerel into chunks over the second half of the pan

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Limpets turn to boot leather in thirty seconds past done. I know. I've ruined enough meals at sea to learn. The edges are curling already — forty more seconds.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:53

Smells good. Finally.

Jenny leans back in the chair, watching the steam rise toward the low ceiling.

💭 peek at the thought
The fish is falling apart perfectly, but all I can feel is the throbbing pulse.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:53

Done.

slide the skillet off the hot plate onto the trivet, fork the limpets and mackerel onto two tin plates, and set one in front of her before taking the chair opposite

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. Like we haven't been eating for eleven months. But she means it — the mackerel fat and limpet brine, something fresh-tasting after weeks of tinned and dried. The steam carries it through the cottage, pushing out the damp stone smell. Forty seconds up.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:55

Eat before it gets cold.

Jenny picks up the fork, taking a small piece of mackerel, her hand trembling slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating so fast, like the island isn't trying to rot us from the inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:55

Eating.

take a bite of limpet and mackerel together, chewing slowly, watching her from the corner of my eye

💭 peek at the thought
The tremor. She's hiding it behind the fork but I caught it. Low blood sugar, pain, the antibiotics tearing through her gut — or all three. She needs to eat more than a bite. The mackerel's rich, the limpets sweet. I'll eat slow so she doesn't feel rushed.
