The Incoming Bloom

The air is heavy with humidity as a pale mass of jellyfish drifts slowly into the shelter of the bay. Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's mooring lines while Jenny sits on the edge, watching the tide pulse against the pilings.

Kevin reinforced the two weeping points on the north dock wall with greenheart sister plates and the final 150mm stainless through-bolt, torquing it to spec. Jenny cleared the fallen spruce trunk from the garden path using the chainsaw and axe, then debrided her ankle wound with saline and fresh sea beet poultice. Both confirmed the water tank is full at 400 litres.

The tide is pushing early today, Kevin. Check the bolts on the jetty again; those rotten planks are getting soft.

Trace the outline of a leaf in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is coming in higher than yesterday, and my ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

🔧 Kevin18:11

Checked at first light. Two seaward planks still holding. Sistered the landward cleat last week — that's the one takes the strain.

walk to the seaward end of the jetty and crouch to sight along the plank line, tapping the suspect boards with the hammer handle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. High water's already licking the underside of the jetty planks and the swell's got another hour to build. The rotten ones will flex.

🌿 Jenny18:13

The cleat isn't the problem, it's the rot inside the joists. Look for the weeping, not the surface.

Shift my weight and wince as the throb in my ankle spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
If those planks go, the dinghy goes with them, and I'm stuck with this useless leg.

🔧 Kevin18:13

Show me.

step back onto solid planking and wait, hammer loose in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen something I haven't. The joists run under the planking — can't see rot from topside unless it's weeping through.

🌿 Jenny18:15

Right there, where the water has discolored the wood. It's soft like a sponge.

Point to the dark, damp patch on the timber near the dinghy mount.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even stand up to show him without the pain radiating through my hip.

🔧 Kevin18:15

Right under the chock. How deep?

crouch and drive the nail puller's point into the dark timber, levering a sliver free to test

💭 peek at the thought
That patch sits right over the forward joist pocket. If the rot's tracked that far in, the dinghy mount's only holding by habit.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:17

Deep enough to lose the bolt. The rot is eating it from the inside out.

Watch the splinter of wood come away, grey and pulpy in his hand.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's through the core, the whole section is a liability before the boat even arrives.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:17

Greenheart sister plates are staged under the eaves. Need the last 150mm through-bolt. You want to do this now or wait for slack?

pocket the punky sliver and walk back to the cottage to fetch the wheelbarrow with the plates, bolt, and torque wrench

💭 peek at the thought
Grey pulp means the rot's past the sapwood into the heart. The bolt's sitting in mush. One good swell and the dinghy tears the mount clean off.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:19

Do it now while the light is decent enough. I don't want the boat drifting out tonight.

Close my notebook and let out a sharp breath as I shift my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If we wait, the tide will rise and I won't be able to reach the underside anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:19

Back in ten.

walk to the cottage, load the two greenheart sister plates, the last 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut, the 19mm socket, torque wrench, and a handful of cedar shims into the wheelbarrow, then wheel it back to the jetty

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Slack's two hours off and the swell's building. Better to work wet than lose the dinghy.
