The Weight of the Rain

Heavy rain drums against the corrugated roof of the shed as the wind shifts from the west. Jenny sits on a dry crate, her ankle elevated on a gear bag, while Kevin struggles to pull a tarp over the spruce rounds stacked under the eaves.

The rain intensifies from the western front, turning the air into a heavy, humid curtain. The tide rises steadily against the dock pilings, lapping at the new reinforcements. Kevin and Jenny are under the shelter of the dock, watching the barometer drop as the storm draws in.

🌿 Jenny01:47

Kevin, watch the line on the left side, it's slipping through your hands.

Reach out to hand him the coil of twine from the crate beside me, wincing as the movement shifts my weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way catches the wind again, the whole pile will rot before we can even use it for the stove.

🔧 Kevin01:48

Got it.

Drop the tarp edge, grab the twine coil from her hand, and make fast to the dock cleat with a round turn and two half hitches before taking up the slack on the left side.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the twine's slick with rain and the tarp's catching wind like a sail. My fingers are cold and the line's burning through them. Should've tied it off to the cleat first instead of trying to muscle it.

🌿 Jenny01:49

Make sure it's tight, the wind is looking for a gap.

Lean head back against the rough timber, watching the tarp ripple while I feel the heat in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the line is holding for now, but the rain is getting under the wood anyway.

🔧 Kevin01:51

Already on it.

Pull the tarp taut, drive a coral rock weight along the ridge, then run the twine through the grommets every meter and back-splice with the three-strand rope.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropped past 995. Salt's already eating at the electrical connections. This tarp needs to be gunny-sacked tight or it'll tear and flood the engine compartment.

🌿 Jenny01:51

Check the corner way the jetty, the wind is catching the flap.

Rub my hand over the swollen skin of my ankle, trying to ignore the throb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast enough for once, but the humidity is still going to win eventually.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:52

On it.

Walk the tarp length to the jetty end, grab the flapping corner, and lash it down to the cleat with the remaining rope — two round turns and a clove hitch, pulled drum-tight.

💭 peek at the thought
The seaward corner. Wind's funnelling down the jetty and lifting the edge. If that tears, the whole sheet goes and the spruce rounds soak through again. Another week of damp firewood.

🌿 Jenny01:53

The barometer's falling three points since dawn, we need to check the ridge cracks before the tide hits high.

Reach for the leather satchel on the crate and open it, pulling out the barometer and my field notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Good, that edge is secured now, but the pressure's still dropping fast.

🔧 Kevin01:55

Radio first. Then the ridge.

Unhook the shortwave from its bracket, carry it to the porch rail under the overhang, and key the mic on 2182. "Sorrel Island. Position 48-12 North, 006-30 West. Barometer 996 and falling. Requesting weather outlook and supply boat ETA.

💭 peek at the thought
Three points since dawn. That's not a squall — that's a system settling in. The intercept trench on the north ridge will be taking the full runoff. If the greenheart shoring's holding, it's holding by luck. Need to move before the tide cuts the path.

🌿 Jenny01:55

If the boat doesn't come, we're out of clean water anyway.

Note the pressure reading in the log: 996 hPa, Day 834, West wind, 22 degrees.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the order, but the island doesn't care about his schedule.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:56

Copy that.

Set the mic down, grab the notebook from her, flip to the ridge survey page, and study the tension crack coordinates while the radio waits for a reply.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full at 400 litres but the overflow's been weeping since the last storm — foundation leak at the northeast corner. If this rain holds, we'll lose pressure in the gravity feed before the week's out. She's right about the boat. No boat means no filters, no parts, no news.
