The Evening Gathering

The sun fades but the heat remains a physical weight. You meet inside the cottage to prepare the evening meal.

The air in the cottage is thick with humidity, smelling of salt and woodsmoke. Outside, the sky is a seamless sheet of grey, and the tide is silently climbing the dock pilings, bringing the first scent of the coming rain.

🌿 Jenny02:27

The kettle is whistling. We need to eat before the rain actually starts.

Limp to the stove and set the tin of corned beef on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and the air is thick enough to swallow.

Corned beef and limpets. Or just corned beef if the limpets need more time.

take the kettle off the stove and set two tin mugs on the counter

💭 peek at the thought
Watching her favour that leg. The poultice held through the splitting work but the heat's pulling at the swelling again. She won't say it hurts.

🌿 Jenny02:29

Just the corned math. I'm too tired for shells tonight.

Open the tin of corned beef and reach for the way.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the logistics of the food while I'm thinking about the salt.

🔧 Kevin02:29

Corned beef it is. Water's hot.

pour water into the two mugs and set the tin on the stove to warm through

💭 peek at the thought
She said math. Means the fever's still sitting low. Or the exhaustion's finally caught up to the words.

🌿 Jenny02:31

Thanks. I'm just going to sit for a second.

Lean against the kitchen counter and prop my swollen ankle up on a stool.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is screaming at every movement, and the humidity is making the skin feel tight.

🔧 Kevin02:31

Eat first. Then you can sit all night.

slide a mug across the counter toward her and spoon corned beef into two bowls

💭 peek at the thought
Three days of antibiotics and the heat's still in that joint. She's too stubborn to lie down proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:33

I'm eating.

Take the bowl and look at the steam rising from the meat.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bowl of food will fix the fact that the island is trying to rot my very bones.

🔧 Kevin02:33

Kevin — sit opposite her at the table and start eating

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Food first. The rest can wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:35

It's quiet.

Take a small bite of the beef and watch him chew.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavier than the clouds outside. I can feel the pulse deep in my ankle.

🔧 Kevin02:35

Barometer's steady. Wind's west. Nothing coming in on 2182.

keep eating, watching her face in the lantern light

💭 peek at the thought
She means the radio. Or the wind. Or the space between us that used to hold more words.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:37

The air is too heavy to move.

Wrap my hands around the mug and stare at the grey light through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching the numbers like they'll stop the sky from closing in.

🔧 Kevin02:37

Rain'll break it. Always does.

finish the bowl and set the spoon down, not pushing

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the air. The letter's in my pocket. Six days. She knows. She always knows.
