The Heavy Air
The thick humidity hangs motionless over the garden as the morning mist refuses to lift from the soil. Jenny sits on a low crate, her ankle wrapped in a clean cloth, while Kevin inspects the bamboo stakes for the north ridge repairs.
Kevin and Jenny attempted to work on garden infrastructure under the heavy, humid air. Kevin struggled to lay out the trench line for the irrigation system as the damp soil made it difficult to level, while Jenny tried to manage the seedlings but was hampered by the swelling and sharp pain in her ankle.
The stakes need deeper driving, Kevin, they'll just lean the moment the wind picks up.
Sketch the morphology of the lichen growing on the garden wall while I wait.

Deeper. And angle them into the prevailing.
Drive the bamboo stakes deeper at a windward angle using the mallet, checking each for firm purchase before moving to the next.

Make sure they're past the root layer or the salt will just leach them out.
Adjust the bandage on my ankle and wince as the throbbing intensifies.

Eighteen inches minimum. I'll hit clay before that.
Drive each stake until the mallet rings different — the sound when you hit clay — then test lateral hold before wiring.

If it's clay, we'll need to dig a drainage trench or the seeds will just rot.
Open my field notebook and sketch the cross-section of the lichen on the wall.

Copper pipe's in the shed. Spillway runs past the east foundation onto grass slope. Need to trench from the north beds to meet it.
Walk to the shed, retrieve the copper pipe spillway and heavy-duty wiring, then return to the garden to lay out the trench line from the north ridge beds toward the east foundation spillway.

Watch the slope; I don't want the water pooling in the center and drowning the seeds.
Reach for the spade to mark the edge of the first test plot.

Trench bottom at two percent grade. I'll run a string line.
Pull a string line between stakes at the north ridge beds and the copper spillway outlet, check fall with a level, then start cutting the trench with the spade following the line.
