← Day 835

the garden · day 835 · midday

Rain-soaked labor

The rain tapers to a drizzle as the tide begins its slow retreat, exposing the salt-crusted lower shelves once more.

The warm rain continues in steady pulses, turning the garden soil into a heavy, clinging mud. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and kelp beds near the south dock. Kevin works in the garden, trying to secure the seedlings against the gusts, while Jenny rests on the cottage porch, her ankle throbbing in the humid dampness.

Tide's turning. Lower shelves coming clear.

walk to the garden's north end to inspect the shade cloth anchors and irrigation trench line

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The tide dropping means I can finally see what the salt water did to the lower garden shelves and the north ridge anchors. Engine's running clean — vibration's down to a dull hum at idle. Might actually get the irrigation trench dug today if the soil firms up enough to hold a line.

Check the anchors. The wind was pulling at the cloth again.

Jenny winces and wipes mud off her hand, then begins to press the sea beet seeds into the soil with trembling fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide stays out long enough, I can finish the test plots, but this ankle is screaming.

Anchors first. Then the trench.

examine the shade cloth anchor points along the north ridge, checking the oak stakes and wiring for crab damage or wind fatigue

💭 peek at the thought
She's still favoring the ankle. The trembling's new — or maybe just worse today. Cold, exhaustion, or the infection flaring. Need to watch it.

way make sure they hold. The salt spray is getting everywhere.

Jenny shifts her weight, biting her lip to stifle a sharp throb in her ankle, as she reaches for the heirloom tomato seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's a schedule, but the soil is too heavy right now.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Bamboo's harder. Crabs won't touch it. Driving them now while the ground's soft.

pull the bamboo stakes and heavy-duty wiring from the supply crate, then drive new anchor points at each corner and mid-span of the north ridge shade cloth

💭 peek at the thought
Three anchors shredded last week. Coconut crabs got two, wind took the third. Bamboo stakes I recovered from the supply crate should hold better than oak — denser, less appetizing. Heavy-duty wiring's still good. Just need to drive them deep before the soil dries to concrete.

🌿 Jenny03:07

That's... better than worrying about it all winter.

Jenny sits heavily on the overturned spruce rounds, wincing as her ankle throbs, then carefully opens the rusted seed tin and starts pouring sea beet seeds onto her palm.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. He's thinking practically. The bamboo will last through another storm.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Trench waits. Soil's too wet. Walls won't hold.

set the copper spillway pipe and gravel beside the planned trench line, ready for when the ground firms up

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about the garden like it's a given we'll be here through winter. Maybe it is. The anchors will hold — bamboo goes two feet down, wiring's rated for eighty knots. But the trench... soil's still soup. Dig it now and the walls collapse. Wait too long and the clay bakes hard as iron. That copper spillway pipe from the crate should handle the slope if I can bed it in gravel first.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Right. The garden is turning to soup today.

Jenny sighs, looking at the mud-slicked earth, and begins to apply the sea beet poultice to her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. If I dig now, the rain will just wash the seeds away anyway.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Going to check the Yanmar mounts. Back in a bit.

walk to the dock and inspect the Yanmar engine mounting bolts and prop shaft alignment while the engine is still warm from the test run

💭 peek at the thought
She's managing the ankle. Good. The poultice is fresh — sea beet, mint, honey. Swelling's down from yesterday. Infection's retreating. She doesn't need me hovering. The irrigation can wait until the ground takes a shape. Better use of the hour: check the Yanmar's mounting bolts while the engine's warm. Vibration at half-throttle could be the mast bracket alignment or the prop shaft sleeve. Either way, it's not fixing itself.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Watch out for the oil on the deck.

Jenny leans against the cold stone wall, letting the throbbing in her ankle settle as she begins to sketch the lichen she found earlier in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's fixing something. I can't even stand straight today.
