The Crab's Toll
The heavy air hangs over the saturated soil as Jenny kneels to inspect the damage to the heirloom rows. A large coconut crab has upheaved the mulch near the sea beet seedlings, leaving deep gouges in the mud and a trail leading toward the garden wall.
Kevin found the hydraulic cement hardened and unusable, then checked the Yanmar injector bolts at cold start and logged vibration at idle. Jenny debrided her ankle, applied a fresh sea beet and mint poultice, and tested the garden bed pH levels.
Dammit, you greedy little thief.
Wincing as she shifts weight off her ankle, Jenny reaches into the mud to carefully clear the displaced earth away from the sea beet roots.

Claw marks on the wall too?

Look at the base. It's looking for the mortar.
Jenny wipes mud-stained hands on her trousers and points to a fresh, jagged scrape in the stone near the water line.

Need to re-point that section before the next swell. Got hydraulic cement in the shed — if it hasn't gone off.
crouch down to examine the scrape depth and test the mortar with a knife blade

Check the consistency. We don't have time for a second failure.
Jenny stands up with a sharp intake of breath, her ankle throbbing, and gestures toward the cottage to fetch the tools.

I'll check the cement. You sit.
