Preparing for the rain

You both meet in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. The sky has finally darkened completely.

The humidity is oppressive as the clouds thicken, making any physical labor feel heavy and sluggish. Kevin and Jenny stay inside the cottage to avoid the damp heat while waiting for the weather to break or fully settle in.

Kettle's on. Coffee'll be ready in two minutes.

set a second tin mug on the table and pour from the kettle into both

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Barometer was right. Engine's done for today anyway — humidity'll play hell with the injector seating if I keep at it. Better she's inside with the ankle elevated than out on the porch pretending the garden's not flooding.

The pH is too low in the back beds. Way low.

sit heavily at the kitchen table, rubbing my way ankle, and watch the steam rise from the mugs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the water while the world is literally dissolving outside the window.

🔧 Kevin05:00

How low?

slide into the chair opposite, wrap hands around the mug, wait

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle bad. The debridement yesterday went deeper than she let on. Back beds are the ones furthest from the lime spread — salt's been leaching in since the storm surge last month.

6.2. It's dropping. If I don't lime the soil, grandmother's seeds are dead before they even sprout.

pull my notebook toward me and sketch a jagged line of the sea beet morphology, my pencil pressing too hard against the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants a number like it'll stop the rot from spreading.

🔧 Kevin05:03

Lime's on the porch. Two sacks. Spread it today or the rain washes it straight into the spring.

reach across the table, thumb brushing the jagged pencil line, then pull back and drink coffee

💭 peek at the thought
6.2 explains the damping-off. Tomatoes need 6.5 minimum, peppers 6.0 — they're right on the edge. She's pushing the pencil hard enough to tear the page. Ankle's throbbing. She won't say it.

🌿 Jenny05:03

I can't carry two sacks with this ankle. Not in this mud.

look down at the swelling under my sock, then back at the tin of seeds sitting on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a task, like tightening a bolt on the Yanmar.

🔧 Kevin05:04

I'll haul them. You stay off it.

stand, drain the mug, head for the porch door

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking. Won't say the words but she's asking. Ankle's hot to touch even from here — saw the red line creeping past her mark this morning. Two sacks is forty kilos each. Mud's knee-deep on the path. She'd crawl it if I didn't go.

🌿 Jenny05:05

Don't get stuck in the muck. The path is turning to soup.

watch him step out into the grey, then pick up my pencil and start sketching the structure of the sea much leaves again.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the heavy lifting while the island eats the rest.
