The Heavy Air

Kevin crouches by the Yanmar engine, inspecting the raw water pump housing as the humidity clings to his skin. Jenny sits on a bench, wrapping her ankle in a clean cloth while watching the grey tide roll over the pil.

Kevin stands at the dock as the grey morning air hangs heavy with 24°C wet season humidity. The tide is low, exposing the slick rocks and the base of the south pilings. Jenny is in the cottage, her ankle throbbing despite the sea beet poultice, as the antibiotic course is the only thing holding back the infection in the heat.

🌿 Jenny05:35

The tide is coming high today. The boat won't reach the jetty easily.

Tightens the bandage on her ankle with a wince, then picks up her pencil to sketch the morphology of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is going to rot those planks before the boat even arrives, and he's too busy with the pump to see the dock.

🔧 Kevin05:36

Boat'll wait for slack. Captain knows the channel.

torque the Yanmar raw water pump housing bolts to 35Nm, then wipe hands on rag

💭 peek at the thought
Bronze adapter's seated clean. Housing bore's still within tolerance. Just need to torque the bolts to spec and she'll hold. Jenny's right about the tide — spring coefficient's pushing it higher than the pilings were cut for.

🌿 Jenny05:37

The channel doesn't care about the schedule. The dock is failing us anyway.

Presses the pencil to the paper, detailing the jagged edge of the sea beet leaf with obsessive precision.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the seeds rot in the tin and I rot in this cottage.

🔧 Kevin05:38

Dock's held three winters. North piling sister's sound. South stringer's scarfed. She'll take the boat.

stand, wipe hands on trousers, walk to the dock edge and sight along the pilings to the channel markers

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock. She's talking about the supply boat not showing. About the antibiotics running out. About her ankle tracking red past the calf yesterday. The channel's the least of it.

🌿 Jenny05:39

We'll see. If the tide shifts, the dinghy goes with it.

Stops sketching and looks at the heavy tin of seeds on the bench beside her.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees the wood, I see the rot eating the heart out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:40

Dinghy's lashed. Warp's fifty metres to the ring, doubled on the north piling. She's not going anywhere.

crouch by the tin, tap the lid with a fingernail — hollow ring, not solid

💭 peek at the thought
The tin marked E. Heavy. Rusted. Sealed. She's been turning it over in her hands for days. Whatever's in it — seeds, charts, her grandmother's notes — she's saving it for something. Or someone. The dinghy's tied double now, storm warp and bow spring. She'll ride the surge unless the mooring ring lets go again. And if it does, I'll be in the water after her.

🌿 Jenny05:41

It's not just the boat I'm worried about.

Pulls the tin closer to her body, shielding it from the damp air.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a rope can stop the island from taking what it wants.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:42

What's in it?

stay crouched, forearms on knees, not reaching for it

💭 peek at the thought
She's shielding it like it's alive. Like it's the seabird chick we pulled from the tide line — fragile, not ours to keep, but we kept it anyway. The tin's just metal and rust and whatever her grandmother put inside. Seeds. Letters. The chart fragments she burned. She thinks I don't know about the chart fragments. She thinks I don't know about the letter to Tom she wrote and didn't send. She thinks I don't know she's been saving the last of the metronidazole for me if the infection turns.
