← Day 840

Apart — Kevin at the spring, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday check-in

Kevin is at the spring checking water flow; Jenny is at the north cliffs sketching sea beet morphology.

Kevin headed to the spring to gather water and check the Yanmar intake as the tide rose. Jenny remained on the north cliffs, struggling to manage the swelling in her ankle while watching the waves come in.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the spring

You kneel at the spring with the new test kit, the water clear and cold. The flow seems steady, but you'll know more once the strips develop.

🔧 Kevin07:59

Kevin — open the new water test kit, dip a strip in the spring basin, set it on the rock to develop, and watch the colours change

💭 peek at the thought
Four hundred litres in the tank and still testing the spring. Habit, not need. But habits kept this place standing.

🔧 Kevin08:03

Kevin — pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the water log page, and write: Day 840 — spring test: coliform neg, nitrates neg, pH 6.8, flow steady. Kit strips: 3 remaining.

💭 peek at the thought
Strip's turned. Clean. No coliform, no nitrates, pH sits around 6.8. Same as last season. Good water. Should log it.

🔧 Kevin08:06

Kevin — stand, stretch the cold from my knees, and walk back up the path toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Done here. Tide's pushing up the beach — can hear it on the shingle. Jenny's at the cliffs. Best walk back, check the ankle before the antibiotic dose is due. Radio scan at 2000. Still hours.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on a flat rock above the spray line, notebook braced on your good knee. The sea beet clusters cling to the cliff face, glands glittering. Your ankle throbs in time with the surf.

🌿 Jenny08:01

Jenny — make sketch: "Sea beet gland density gradient - north cliffs transect"

💭 peek at the thought
The glands are more pronounced at the salt interface layer—nature's own desalination system, efficient and brutal. My grandmother would have sketched them like this, careful lines showing the sodium pump mechanisms. The ankle pulse syncs with the wave crash—throb-crash, throb-crash. Infection maps my limits but not my purpose.

🌿 Jenny08:05

Come on, Jenny. Just once more.

pack notebook into the waterproof casing; stand slowly using the driftwood cane; limp toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning. I can smell the ozone and the heavy rain coming. If I don't get back before the downpour, the sketches will be ruined. My ankle is a lead weight, pulling at every tired muscle.

🌿 Jenny08:09

Jenny — check the barometer; watch the pressure drop.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning that bruised shade of purple. If the rain hits now, the path will be a slide of mud and slick guano. My ankle is screaming with every uneven step.
