The Calm Before the Boat

Jenny sits at the kitchen table with her ankle elevated while Kevin prepares the first dose of antibiotics. Outside, the air is heavy and still, and the barometer holds steady at 985 hPa.

The air in the cottage is heavy with the humidity and the smell of salt-water. Jenny swallows the medicine with a grimace, her hand shaking as she sets the mug down. Kevin watches the tide recede through the window, his mind on the structural integrity of the dock and the infection in her ankle. The pressure is dropping, and the supply boat is only two days away.

🔧 Kevin08:41

Trimethoprim first. Two tablets now, two at night. Take them with the broth — empty stomach makes it sit wrong.

Set the two white tablets on the chipped saucer beside her tin mug, then pour the remaining limpet broth from the pot into the mug, steam curling against the cold kitchen air.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's holding but the air feels wrong — heavy, the way it gets before something breaks. Three days until the supply boat's due, if it comes. Jenny's ankle has the trimethoprim starting today, but I'm watching the red line above the dressing. If it pushes past the mark by noon, we're past what pills can fix.

I know. Just give me the mug.

Reach for the saucer, pick up the tablets with trembling fingers, and swallow them with a hot, salty gulp of the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a schedule will fix the rot, but the skin is still tight and throbbing deep down.

(nothing — just watch her set the mug down, the broth leaving a salt ring on the tin)

Pull the chair out opposite her and sit, the wood creaking under the weight. Reach for the notebook on the shelf above the stove, flip past the radio logs to a blank page, and write the date and dose in pencil: Day 841.

💭 peek at the thought
The tremor in her fingers isn't the cold. She's been steady through the lancing, the debridement, the daily rewrapping — but the pills make it real in a way the poultices didn't. Antibiotics mean we've admitted the poultices aren't enough.

🌿 Jenny08:43

The seeds need to be sorted own. If the pressure stays up.

major back against the chair, watching his pencil move while I feel the dull throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's documenting my failure like it's a specimen in a jar.

🔧 Kevin08:44

Seeds can wait. Radio check at 0600 comes first. Then the dinghy lines and generator fuel.

Close the notebook and set it back on the shelf. Stand and move to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width to read the barometer on the exterior wall — 985 hPa, needle not moving. Let the door swing shut.

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting — the seeds, the pressure, anything but the ankle and what the pills might not fix. The tremor's gone from her fingers now, settled into the white-knuckle grip on the mug. Barometer at 985 and steady, she says. But steady at 985 isn't good; it's just not falling yet.

🌿 Jenny08:45

I'll be ready. way don't expect miracles.

Reach for the seed tin on the table, tracing the rusted rim with my thumb without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is a list with him, but the island doesn't follow a schedule.

🔧 Kevin08:46

Didn't ask for miracles. Asked for the radio schedule kept and the lines doubled.

Walk to the radio shelf, switch the shortwave on. The static hiss fills the kitchen — white noise, no voices. Set it to 2182, then 6215, key the mic: "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, routine check zero-six-hundred. Over." Release.

💭 peek at the thought
Miracles. She means the pills. She means the supply boat in three days. She means the red line I marked on her skin yesterday that's already faded pink at the edges — not gone, just waiting. The tin marked E sits between us, heavy with whatever her grandmother sealed inside. She won't open it. Neither will I.

🌿 Jenny08:47

I'm starting the seeds after breakfast.

lean back in the chair, watching the steam rise from the mug, feeling the heat in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is the only thing talking back to me right now.
